Newsweek of McCain’s Implosion: America ‘Won’t Listen to a Military Man’ Anymore (Attack on Thompson Included)

-By Warner Todd Huston

One of the chief reasons that Republicans in general and Conservatives in particular were always wary of John “the maverick” McCain is the slobbering love that the MSM so constantly lavished upon him. The MSM is so distrusted that their love for McCain relayed to the country that there must be something wrong with him. As his campaign descends into ever lower depths of disarray, we may begin to see the MSM fall to the floor in abject lamentations over his demise. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth now that their favorite Republican looks to be a goner, at least if Michael Hirsh of Newsweek is any indication. In “Why McCain’s Collapse Matters”, Hirsh not only laments McCain’s diminishment of influence, but blames the American people for not listening to military “heroes” on how evil this war is. Hirsh also uses his piece as an excuse to repeatedly bash Fred Thompson using the media’s “He’s just an actor” mantra. Naturally, Hirsh learns all the wrong lessons from his review of history and displays it in this little tsk tsking tirade aimed at the American people for their gall in not fawning over McCain like the MSM does.

Hirsh starts out bashing Fred Thompson by reminding us that Thompson was still playing his “tough D.A.” role on TV as McCain was supposedly living that role in real life while he was giving Donald Rumsfeld a piece of his mind during an appearance on the Hill by Rummy early in the Iraq war. Hirsh rightfully bemoans the fact that Donald Rumsfeld was not listening to McCain’s correct advice at that time. McCain was calling for more troops at that early stage but Rummy thought the Administration’s own strategy of fewer troops and quicker “Iraqification” was better. Hirsh is mistaken to imagine that Bush was led by the nose by Rummy, however. It was Bush’s strategy, not just Rumsfeld’s. Hish is correct that McCain’s ideas of a “surge” before there was one was dead on. But, from this point Hirsh flies off track and runs wildly into the tall grass.

More of Thompson’s Federalist Philosophy – Great Analysis

I mentioned in my report on where Fred Thompson stands on the abortion issue that his was a Federalist’s interpretation of what role the Federal government has and what it should and shouldn’t take upon itself to do with it. I pointed out that Fred Thompson correctly understands that the Federal government has no role in regulating abortion and that this includes eliminating the anti-constitutional Supreme Court ruling that is Roe v. Wade.

Recently, Ed Morrissey over at Captain’s Quarters posted another great and revealing report on another of Thompson’s commitments to the Federalist ideology. This time it is one where Thompson had turned his attention to the 10th Amendment.

Ed references the Imwithfred blog where Thompson discusses the issue. I’d suggest reading that along with Ed’s commentary here. Thompson On Federalism.

This may seem like a dry issue, not as sexy and high profile as abortion or what have you. But this is an extremely important issue for conservatives to take into consideration when thinking about a candidate. If Thompson truly commits a presidency to the concept of Federalism, we have the best evidence yet of a candidate who will truly try to REDUCE government interference in all our lives.

So, here is Ed Morrissey’s post…

Everyone Talks About The 10th Amendment …
Captain’s Quarters

One of the themes that recurs in Republican politics is federalism, which its proponents use to move power back towards the states and closer to the electorate where it belongs. The 10th Amendment forms the great touchstone of federalism, in which all powers not expressly delegated to the federal government in the Constitution should remain with the states. Small-government advocates argue that the 10th Amendment got overrun by FDR in the New Deal and has never recovered its proper place in limiting federal power.

However, the 10th Amendment has much in common with Mark Twain’s observation about the weather: it gets plenty of discussion, but no one does anything about it. Fred Thompson says he’ll do more than just talk if elected President:

NY Daily News Misleads About Bush Linking Iraq and 9/11

-By Warner Todd Huston

The New York Daily News perpetrated an interesting, yet subtly misleading headline about president Bush’s Charleston, South Carolina speech on Al Qaeda in Iraq today in theirs titled “W still ties Iraq, 9/11.” Following the left’s playbook of claiming Bush has illicitly linked Saddam’s Iraq to 9/11 their headline made it seem as if Bush, indeed, “still ties” 9/11 to Iraq.

It is, of course, a false claim that Bush linked Iraq to 9/11 either then OR now, but the New York Daily News doesn’t seem too interested in the truth. And for the headline to say “still ties” they are certainly saying that Bush is using past tense verbiage. But, for the most part, Bush is clearly talking present tense in his speech and he still never linked “Iraq” to “9/11” in the way the Daily News headline seems to claim.

The defeatist’s of the left have always claimed that Bush said Saddam Huessein was responsible for 9/11 and that he used that claim to invade and pursue regime change in that oppressed nation. But, there is no speech in which Bush claimed that Saddam was responsible for 9/11… he just never said it. This is a lie that the left has promulgated since Bush announced we were going into Iraq. As the saying goes, “A lie will go round the world while truth is still pulling its boots on”, and this “Bush lied” lie has practically won the footrace with the truth.

Contrary to what the Daily News is trying to mislead everyone into thinking, if one actually reads Bush’s July 24th speech he still did not really link “9/11” to “Iraq.” What Bush really did was link al Qaeda, the al Qaeda that is in Iraq today, to the same network controlled by Osamma bin Ladden, the very same bin Ladden that did take credit for perpetrating 9/11. Bush’s entire focus in his speech was on al Qaeda in Iraq today, not the Iraq of 9/11/2001.

In the Daily News’ phrasing, though, Bush is talking about the Iraq of 9/11, not the Iraq of today.

Thompson’s Waiting Strategy On Target for GOP Governors

-By Warner Todd Huston

As I was saying on the 24th in the post titled ”Some reasons why Thompson’s waiting is a good thing!”, the idea that Thompson is wasting too much time by not jumping in the race right this minute is not the correct way to look at his current strategy of waiting. Now, it looks like the GOP Governors at the National Governors Association agree with me, and Team Thompson. In support of my contention we get an AP report on the NGA meeting in Michigan this past weekend reveals some evidence that Thompson’s wait is not hurting him at all.

In “GOP governors: too early for favorite”, the AP reports that many of the GOP governors are saying that it’s too early to worry about who’s in and who they will endorse.

Republican governors say it’s too soon to worry about the absence of a clear favorite for the GOP presidential nomination. The muddled picture could even be a blessing, some said in interviews during the weekend meeting of the National Governors Association.

And it seems some are waiting to assess the field once Thompson announces.

The candidates’ scramble to break from the pack and speculation about possible new entries such as former Sen. Fred Thompson are keeping the race in the headlines.

But, whether support from these governors is contingent on Thompson or not, few seem too worried about it all.

Abortion – Where is Fred Thompson? Where Should Conservatives be?

-By Warner Todd Huston

Probable Presidential candidate Fred Thompson has recently been caught up in an imbroglio on abortion at the very start of his nascent run for the White House. He has been “caught” working as a lobbyist for a pro-abortion group and, when running for the Senate and while a newly minted Senator, Thompson filled out a questionnaire or two that could lead one to imagine he isn’t staunchly against the procedure. In this piece, I would like to address Thompson’s voting record and positions, show that they are consistent from the beginning, and juxtapose them with those for which a real Conservative, Federalist should advocate.

Thompson’s Political Record – 1994 to current

When he first began to run for the Senate, Thompson gave an interview for the newsletter of the Tennessee Republican Liberty Caucus in which he said of his views on abortion, “(The Federal) Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The women must make the ultimate decision. Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own.”

This was in response to some Tennessee critics of his who claimed he was pro-choice on abortion but it would seem more to be a libertarian, Federalist view point, than a strictly pro-abortion view.

In 1994, Thompson filled out a survey for Project Vote Smart about his views of abortion. He placed his mark next to the box that said: “Abortions should be legal in all circumstances as long as the procedure is completed within the first trimester of the pregnancy.”

Thompson’s views show, however, that he thinks many restrictions should be placed on the procedure as opposed to being just free and easy to get. On the questionnaire he was for the following restrictions:

THE AD YOUR KIDS SHOULD TAKE TO SCHOOL

-By Vince Johnson

It is a full-page ad designed to appear in such papers as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, or USA Today. The headline is in 72 point type and appears over a photo of 12 Middle School students in a classroom:

WILL YOU SEND US TO PRISON IF WE
REFUSE TO MAKE PAYMENTS ON YOUR DEBTS?

We are talking about your federal debt. You keep borrowing money from our future to finance wars, build billion dollar bridges between Alaskan villages, and “little” things like the multi-million dollar Indoor Rainforest Project in Iowa. You blame this continual borrowing on the politicians and do nothing except complain about it whenever you get tired of yakking about the weather.

If you were truly responsible adults, you would tell us the truth. You would tell us that you do not have enough money to pay for all the things you want, so you borrow from us. The amount is now around nine trillion dollars and increasing everyday. That’s Nine Thousand Billion Dollars you have borrowed from us!

How would you like it if we borrowed that kind of money directly from your future? How would you like it if we did it without your permission? How would you like it if we passed laws authorizing the courts to send you to prison if you refused to make payments on money we borrowed from you?

That is exactly what your generation is doing to our generation. If you want to discuss this further, please wait until we graduate from high school. These next four or five years may be the few remaining where we can be kids and never have to worry about our nation going bankrupt or how we can survive with what we have left after paying taxes.

This ad concept designed by Vince Johnson, Reality Consultant

I am a veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict. I believe it is unconstitutional to force our children to make payments on a debt we created without their knowledge or approval. If you agree, print this article and have your kids use it at school for “Show and Tell.”

Democrats NOT ‘Fiscally Responsible’ as Claimed in ‘06 Elections

-By Warner Todd Huston

SINK THE EARMARK

Contrary to the claims that the voters’ “war weariness” was the reason the Republicans lost their majority in Congress in the 2006 midterms, the real reason that Republican and moderate voters lost their zest for supporting the GOP is because of the lie that the GOP majority made of their long standing plank of fiscal responsibility. The earmark frenzy and Congressional pork spending that the GOP indulged in, with the Democrat Party gleefully joining in, is what lost them the 2006 elections. Disenchantment with the war, the media’s favorite claim, is not the chief reason the GOP lost the confidence of the American people. After all, the president, not Congress, is the face of this war.

The right of center American voter looked to a GOP controlled Congress that seemed indistinguishable from what we would have with a Democrat controlled legislature and wondered: “why not vote in a real Democrat if what we have are just like them anyway?” So, the American people thought to give the Democrat Party a shot at proving their claims of newfound responsibility. The Republican’s hypocrisy was just too much for conservative voters and the centrists just saw no reason to stick with the GOP.

So, as a result we got the Nancy Pelosi House of Representatives and Harry Reid as majority leader in the Senate.

“Democrats will not disappoint… We pledge to make this the most honest, ethical, and open Congress in history…With integrity, civility, and fiscal responsibility as our guide, Democrats intend to move forward with the agenda for change on which we were elected.”– Incoming Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Nov. 14th, 2006 as published in the Christian Science Monitor

But, since their embarrassing loss in the last midterms, the GOP has been endeavoring to regain their status as the Party of fiscal responsibility. It hasn’t been easy, mostly because their own voters are so skeptical that their efforts have the ring of authenticity. But, still, it is good the Republicans are at least trying.

Some Reasons Why Thompson’s Waiting is a Good Thing!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Getting Edgy Waiting for Thompson?

I know what you’re thinking; “WHY can’t he just announce and get it over with?”

There have been a few scattered reports that Thompson supporters are getting tired of waiting, getting edgy over it all, or otherwise are wondering what the hold up might be? I think there are some excellent reasons why waiting doesn’t materially hurt Thompson, the impatience of some of his supporters aside.

First of all we have the polls that are consistently in the candidate-to-be’s favor. Here is just the latest report:

ROCHESTER, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In the Republican nomination race, former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, while still not a declared candidate, has edged marginally ahead of Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Three in ten (29%) of those who expect to vote in a Republican primary or caucus would vote for Thompson while 28 percent would vote for Giuliani (and a one percent difference is not statistically significant).

Without spending a penny, without having to involve himself in pointless debates and peeing contests with other candidates, Thompson is consistently either leading the field, or close behind the leader of the polls.

Mitch McConnell, Hero of the GOP in the Senate

-By Warner Todd Huston

We Republicans and Conservatives (not always one in the same thing, necessarily… hello Linc “leftie” Chaffey) have been eyeing the Senate with disgust for many years, now. But we finally have a Senator who knows what to do with power. Mitch McConnell has rode in from the Blue Grass state — um, that would be Kentucky for those unaware — and taken control of the Senate, even though his Party is in minority status.

Frist was a useless addition to the Senate in the role of Majority leader. He did squat for the Party, the country or even his home state of Tennessee in that position. His best service was stepping aside. Yet, for as ineffective as Frist was, Trent “the mouth” Lott was even worse. Lott was, though, a great Democrat as the GOP majority leader. He helped their cause immensely so they should give him massive congrats on his work for them.

But, finally, we’ve got a man that knows what to do as a Party leader. Mitch McConnell has had the supposed majority Party running in circles and he isn’t done yet. Last week he did a masterful job of confounding the chief Defeat-o-crat, Harry Reid, during their showboat all night Senate session.

The Future of the Conservative Cause – Reno, NV Oct. 12,13,14 – BE THERE

-By Warner Todd Huston
A Conference of Conservative Bloggers in October, Reno, Nevada

Well, you’ve seen the banner at the top of this page now for the last few months. The CLC, Conservative Leadership Conference, is the next step in organizing a vital and useful Conservative web presence, so if you want to have anything at all to do with the Conservative movement on the bold, new frontier that is the Internet, you’d better attend!

We have already seen the Internet as the fulcrum of change. With the exposure of Rathergate, Reutersgate, and any number of efforts to expose media lies, not to mention the recently successful efforts to kill the illegal alien amnesty bill, the Internet is proving a powerful tool. If you are interested in taking your conservative message to the people, this is the medium by which to do so.

But, how? That is the question. After all, there are millions of webpages out there. How can you make a difference if you aren’t even being heard? Networking is one of the answers to that dilemma and, attending the CLC in October will help you achieve that networking solution.

You’ll meet thousands of people just like you. People from big name blogs and small, people with the ability to help you get the conservative word out there. People such as Grover G. Norquist; Congressman John Shadegg (Honorary Chair); Bob Barr; Dick Armey; Adrian “Good Morning, Vietnam!” Cronauer; David Avella (GOPAC); Chris Simcox, all are confirmed speakers and guests. Many more will be announced in the near future. So, as you can see, some great guests are in the offing.

As I said, of the future of the conservative movement, no single aspect than the Internet is more important or far-reaching. The power of this medium is virtually untapped, but it is just starting to become a sought after entity for political change. Not every politician has yet “gotten” the power of the Internet, but it won’t be long before not one corner of this country is untouched by its reach.

Now is the time to join the efforts to continue Reagan’s America, no other single method of communication is as effective. And, it is no longer just the written word that we can wield over the Internet for the conservative cause. Audio and video is fast becoming an important tool. And all of it is on the Internet.

So, don’t just sit there, join us in October in Reno for the Conservative Leadership Conference. It is the ground floor of the Conservative movement and you can join there!

And, who knows… perhaps you’ll catch me there? I can’t wait to meet you.

Sun-Times Writer ‘harassed by Irate Republicans’ Over ‘Staunch Republican’ for Dems Story

-By Warner Todd Huston

Jennifer Hunter, the Chicago Sun-Times writer and wife of Sun-Times publisher John Cruickshank, who wrote the recent story I skewered a few days ago revealing a supposed “staunch Republican” from Philly who has suddenly decided to support the Democrats in 2008, has written a new piece today claiming she is being “harassed by a group of irate Republicans” because of her badly researched column. (The interviewee in her piece claimed to be a “staunch Republican” even as his cash donation records prove he almost exclusively supports Democrats) Her follow up, however, seems more like the kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar while blaming everyone around her as opposed to a satisfactory explanation of a failure to fully investigate her story.

Complaining… no, more like whining… that she has been flooded with “daily emails” calling her a liar and demanding that she be fired, Hunter-Cruickshank blames the headline writers instead of her own poor investigative work for the firestorm of criticism.

AP/L.A.Times Don’t Mention Thompson Abortion Lobbying Claims Made by Hillary Supporters

-By Warner Todd Huston

The AP, taking their cue from the new because-she-said-so story offered by the L.A.Times, has run with a short clip on a story that claims Fred Thompson was working as a lobbyist for an abortion agency in 1991, giving the hearsay evidence against him but not offering the meat of his against the claim. The result is that the AP offers more “evidence” against Thompson than it does for him making it too easy to conclude he is “guilty” of the charge of lobbying for an abortion advocacy organization.

The AP did a wonderful job making this story seem more cut and dried than it really is, of course, but the fact is, this claim of Thompson’s supposed lobbying for the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association is nothing but an unproven (and maybe unprovable) claim against Thompson made by people who are well-known, far left activists and heavy contributors to the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. Naturally, neither the AP nor the L.A.Times wastes any time to detail the history of those making these claims against Thompson, leaving their relevant backgrounds completely out of the story.

Gee… why do you think they’d forget to let readers know that this story is based solely of the good word of Hillary supporters?

Here is the entire short AP post on the story:

Thompson Hit Piece Disguised as Bio On Bloomberg’s “News” Service

-By Warner Todd Huston

Is it just me, or did the Bloomberg “news” service just release a hit piece on Senator Fred Thompson disguised as a bio on the Senator just in time for a Michael Bloomberg entrance into the race as an independent presidential candidate? On June 28th Bloomberg writers Kim Chapman and Julianna Goldman brought us “Thompson’s Backers Check His ‘Fire in the Belly’ for 2008 Race”, a piece that reads more like a long series of snide undercuts of Thompson than any serious report on his status as a candidate. The duo exploits every single detraction thrown at the Senator since his days in the Senate leaving the speculation that he is left wanting standing like the elephant in the room.

They begin by making Thompson’s whole life seem like one undeserved, happy accident after another saying that the man has “ascended without much apparent effort” to his place in life. It doesn’t seem to occur to our two intrepid reporterettes that making something seem effortless doesn’t necessarily mean it was so. After all, Fred Thompson did at the very least pass the bar exam, not something so easily done by just anyone. (Chicago’s Mayor Richard M. Daley, for instance, took the bar exam 5 times before he passed and his daddy, Richard J. Daley, was the most corrupt and powerful man since Huey Long and could easily have fenagled his son’s sudden passing grades if he’d have wanted to, fer gosh sakes!) Someone should inform our feminine cynics that it is usually a mark of excellence when someone makes something look easy, not one of accidental “ascendance.”

We Blame the Politicians But We Put Them There

-By Frank Salvato

With the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 (S1639) now stalled – permanently, we hope – at the debate stage in the US Senate, we can come away with one lesson learned from this course of events, an unsettling number of politicians in Washington DC ignored the “baggage” that is their constituency. In light of this undeniable truth, it is understandable that outraged Americans would be looking to the section of the Declaration of Independence that talked about dissolving government. But when one takes a break from pointing fingers – and perhaps raising some toward their elected officials – it would be wise to remember who allowed this to happen.

Let me be perfectly clear, I am not about to apologize for the actions of those who have betrayed their constituencies. In fact, I believe that any elected official who doesn’t hold and respect the inclinations of his constituency in the highest regard should be removed from office. While the positions that elected officials hold need to have a degree of latitude when it comes to enacting the will of the people, it should never be the case that an elected official would be obliged to ignore or look down upon the positions of his constituents.

But the blame for getting to this pathetic and disturbing point simply doesn’t lie – exclusively – with the creatures that dwell inside the beltway or in the State Houses. A major portion of the blame needs to lie with We the People. It lies with you and me.

Media fear of Fred Thompson

-By Melanie Morgan

Can you see it? Can you feel it? The excitement over Fred Thompson’s potential candidacy for president is capturing the imagination of conservatives across the nation.

The “Run Fred Run” phenomenon is important to talk about not because of Thompson himself, but more because of what it says concerning the mood of this nation and the public’s frustration with a lack of leadership in both the conservative movement and the Republican Party.

The allure of a Thompson for President campaign is even evident among some Reagan Democrats who are weighing in on the blogs – and feeling the heat from their liberal colleagues for even considering the notion of crossing party lines.

Unlike the current crop of declared Republican and Democrat candidates, who have spent years plotting and scheming about how they could win their way to the White House, Fred Thompson is truly being drafted to run by people who are sick of abandoned principles and lack of a moral center.

When moments like this occur, occupants of the political and media establishment seem to shudder with convulsions. It ain’t pretty, but it isn’t surprising.

Mitt Romney – Flip Flopper Extraordinaire

I am wholly against a Mitt Romney candidacy for the GOP nomination for President. I have to come right out and say that. I find him not to be believed about ANYTHING he says. He seems to me a man who will say just anything that he thinks will get himself elected and he doesn’t care what crowd he is playing to. He’ll alter his supposed beliefs to make a perfect fit for his newest targeted constituency.

Today he is the so-called conservative candidate. Yesterday he was GOP lite. What will he be tomorrow? Who can tell.

Well, I read a great piece today on Real Clear Politics by Steve Chapman that is a perfect exposition of what I think about Romney.

Enjoy and realize this man’s truth…

The Endless Variations of Edwards and Romney

I have trouble keeping Mitt Edwards and John Romney straight. I’m not even sure I’ve got the names right. They’re both superbly coiffed, youthfully trim, firm-jawed specimens who are equally at home discussing health care or modeling for the Brooks Brothers catalog. One was once named the sexiest politician in America, and the other is easily the sexiest Mormon politician in America.

In their views and policies, however, they could hardly be more different. Well, unless they had a good political reason to be.

The AP Worries for ‘Right-Wing’ Book Publishers’ Future?

-By Warner Todd Huston

The AP has given us a piece on how “Right-Wing” book publishers are “worried” over the future success of publishing books on conservatives topics. One cannot help wonder, though, if the “worry” by the so-called “right-wing” publishers is more like the APs glee when you read their piece titled, “Right-Wing Publishers Worry About Future”, by Hillel Italie, AP National Writer.

The first half of this story leads the reader to imagine that Conservative books are hurting in the market with all the negative quotes employed about their future. Naturally, after that first half about how dismal the future for conservative books is, the story then takes a turn to praise liberal books, showing how “energized” they are, after which the story broadens into a piece about the entire BookExpo America gathering.

When done reading the report, you realize that, despite the story’s title, it isn’t just about how bad the conservative book market is, but, instead, it is a story on the whole of the BookExpo America trade show. Why, exactly, is this titled the way it is, then, if it isn’t just about how bad the conservative market is?

I’m sure you can answer that with a knowing nod… it’s because it is a story saying that conservatism is somehow in trouble, that’s why.

Warming Up Possible MSM Slam Angles on Fred Thompson

-By Warner Todd Huston

In answer to Mark Finkelstein’s question on Newsbusters, “How Will MSM Take on Thompson?”, we may be seeing some possible angles of attack warming up. I won’t claim to know the definitive answer, but Mark’s question got me to taking an occasional look to see how the MSM is approaching Senator Fred Thompson and I think that we might be seeing a few trial balloons on that subject.

Balloon #1 – Thompson is a traitor

As I chronicled in my own Thompson piece about New York Times TV writer, Alessandra Stanley, who poked at the good Senator over his leaving the TV show upon which he played a part, one line of attack says that Fred Thompson is not to be trusted because he is letting down the producers of the TV show. Since the show is in ratings trouble, his leaving looks like some sort of traitorous move as far as Stanley is concerned… not that anyone ELSE sees it, of course.

New York Times Confusing Thompson’s TV Role With Reality

-By Warner Todd Huston

Proving that few people in the entertainment industry can tell the difference between reality and fantasy and in a perfect example of why people who write about entertainment should stay away from the topic of politics, The New York Times today has let lose one of the silliest, most confused political “editorials” yet published about Senator Fred Thompson’s possible run for the White House. Fitting the he’s-only-an-actor mode of considering his potential candidacy, TV writer Alessandra Stanley compounds a prosaic dismissal of the man with a complete inability to keep straight in her head which Fred Thompson she is talking about; the REAL Senator from Tennessee or the character he plays on a popular TV show.

Let’s just say that sagacity and trenchant analysis is not in the offing in Stanley’s “In Casting for President, Will Actor Rate a Callback?”, where this TV writer jarringly fades from real life Thompson to the character he plays on TV’s “Law and Order” repeatedly confusing the “lives” of the two then making assessments based thereupon that seem to come out of thin air… or the rarefied air in Stanley’s mind, in any case.

Naturally, it all starts with a shot at Ronald Reagan as Stanley recounts the oft repeated Jack Warner comment when Reagan announced his run for Governor of California in 1966. “Jimmy Stewart for governor,” he said. “Ronald Reagan for best friend.”

The Conservative Mind – A Must Read For All Americans

The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion Journal has a great piece that all Americans should read to understand American Conservative theory, how it operates, what it posits and how it came to its conclusions.

If you are at all curious about why American Conservatism is different from European conservatives, read this piece. Even if you aren’t, this piece will give you a firmer foundation of what it is that American Conservatism is.

It might help you find some other reading material that might help you in your search for the true American Conservatism. It also shows how utterly bereft of intelligent thought is the American left… which is always good to have pointed out!

The Conservative Mind

The American right is a cauldron of debate; the left isn’t.

BY PETER BERKOWITZ
Tuesday, May 29, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

The left prides itself on, and frequently boasts of, its superior appreciation of the complexity and depth of moral and political life. But political debate in America today tells a different story.

On a variety of issues that currently divide the nation, those to the left of center seem to be converging, their ranks increasingly untroubled by debate or dissent, except on daily tactics and long-term strategy. Meanwhile, those to the right of center are engaged in an intense intra-party struggle to balance competing principles and goods.

Mitt Romney’s skeletons in the closet

I am now going to formally come out and say that I don’t want Mitt Romney as the candidate for the GOP nomination for the Presidency. His religion quite aside, he has proven that he is a flip-flopper extraordinary and simply will say anything to get elected.

The abortion flip flop (his acclaimed “considered” change of heart? Just can’t believe it) and his outright lie that he was a hunter “all his life” are just the latest. But, the Boston Globe has some more that we should all consider VERY carefully before making this hollow, unprincipled man our nominee.

Left Just Likes To Be Mad, No Reason Needed

-By Warner Todd Huston

This story proves once again that the left doesn’t need justification, logic or reality to get a good mad on. They don’t need anything real or important to swarm upon like a hive of unthinking insects, infesting and killing a host, they just need one of their own to head off in that direction so that they can all follow, lemming-like, over that cliff.

The latest cause celebre erupted when Congressman Ted Poe (R, Texas) used a quote from a one time Confederate General in a speech on the floor of Congress. It wasn’t just any Confederate General, though, it was a quote from founder of the KKK, Nathan Bedford Forrest, CS Cavalry General in the war’s western theater.

Ooooo. The KKK founder, huh? Sounds ominous. So, what was the quote? Was it one calling blacks a bad name? Was it one dealing with race relations? Was it anything like that?

No. It was a military quote.

The Democrat Party is angling to destroy the economic and societal balance of the United States by creating a permanent lower class that it can exploit for votes … and the Republicans are helping them.

Now, before you go off castigating me for going off into tin-foil hat territory, I am not saying that this is their stated goal. I do not believe that the Democrats think they are creating a permanent lower, slave class. But, they are looking to create a permanent class of voters who will keep them in power because those voters would ostensibly be forever dependent upon Democrats’ control of government handouts. And that, when all is said and done, is just the same as intending to keep lower class, uneducated (currently) illegal aliens in thrall and enslaved to Democrat Party operatives and in a permanent status as lower class citizens unable to rise from their downtrodden position on the lowest rungs of the ladder of success.

An unregulated flow of immigrants across our southern border has opened the door to the least educated members of the nations south to come here and exploit the opportunities open to them in the USA. They come here to better their lives, and who could blame them? The hellholes they are coming from would cause any sane man to risk all to leave there and come to the USA. Americans who get upset over this law breaking, wondering what kind of scum-bag would purposefully break the law like that, are righteously angry, but that anger is based on a serious misunderstanding of the world these people are leaving.

Has William F. Buckley Chosen Romney for ‘08?

-By Warner Todd Huston

William F. Buckley once said something to the effect that he didn’t want the most conservative nominee as presidential candidate for the GOP, he wanted the most conservative candidate that could win the election as the GOP’s nominee. In light of this sentiment, I am wondering if the lion of old line conservatism has decided that Mitt Romney just might be the “conservative enough” candidate for the GOP in 2008?

Last week, Buckley offered for our consideration a column mentioning Mitt Romney’s conversion from abortion advocate to his new found status of anti-abortion believer — a stance that puts him just in time to offer himself as the GOP candidate for the 2008 GOP nomination — and how so many are rightfully skeptical of this new stance.

In Romney’s Moral Thought Buckley mentions that Romney’s sudden conversion is acclaimed as that born of “studied reflection” on the issue, just as Romney claims. Of course, Buckley seems to conveniently ignore the fact that Romney was still advocating his pro-abortion ideas not too long ago as Governor of Massachusetts making it a bit hard to believe that Mitt spent much time agonizing over this change.

Tommy Thompson tries some bathroom humor

-By Michael M. Bates

If you don’t know who Tommy Thompson is, don’t feel uninformed. He doesn’t rate the media coverage of really important people like Paris Hilton.

Like many others, Mr. Thompson is running for president. His background is not unimpressive. He served as Wisconsin’s governor for an unprecedented four terms. He also ran, with a budget of over half a trillion dollars, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gov. Thompson’s race for the Republican nomination hasn’t caught fire. Fundraising is a problem. Still, in a season where even unannounced candidates qualify as first-tier, his candidacy, theoretically at least, could yet gain traction.

The odds of that have diminished in recent days. It all began with the Republican presidential candidates’ debate aired earlier this month on MSNBC. It’s true that at this stage the only folks watching these events are hardcore political junkies. It’s also true, though, that candidates in them can step on a landmine from which they may never recover.

Great Mimes Move Together (When People Actually Vote)

By R. A. Hawkins

I always enjoy watching the French. They are always going back and forth as the people either go to or don’t go to the polls. In this last election it was more like 85% voter turnout. I hate to say it but it is a little like watching us. America soon will have a chance to act European and toss a bunch of socialists out just like the French did. Although our media and theirs have been silent on the rioting Moslem youths it is obvious that even the French can be awakened. But seeing a recent article in the Timesonline UK I can see that the UK Media is now falling into stupid mode. I don’t mean to say the people in the UK are falling into stupid mode but like our press, their press has also become stupid. But that is what the media has always been like and I don’t care where it is.

I also read another article that demonstrated UK ignorance that had to do with a massive defection of Bush supporters to the Obama camp, and even to the Clinton camp. Between the two of them they have sucked up a whole $750,000 in donations. That’s a stellar haul ain’t it? All that showed me was the reason why Bush has been so darn liberal about some things. He shouldn’t be taking donations from flip floppers; I hear it can make you go blind. And it has too. But somebody escaping from the Bush camp isn’t really something that matters at this juncture. I guess the writer has forgotten that Bush won’t be running for office again. I wonder if the writer has noticed how much Bush has managed to collect for the Republican Party. One of the donors switched because his son is about to be deployed for active service in Afghanistan. Yup it’s all in fun until someone loses an eye. Grow up! But this same donor likes the fact that Obama wants to take action in Darfur.

Illinois County Says NO To Gun Control

-By Warner Todd Huston

The Media was all a frenzy on the debate about gun control right after the VT killings cynically attempting to push their Constitutionally illegal gun banning ideas on a grieving public. But one Illinois County has bravely decided to make moves to protect their 2nd Amendment rights with action by the County Board.

The Pike County Board has adopted a resolution that will oppose any sort of gun control measures that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms adopted by the state of Illinois. A brave move in a state controlled by a gun grabbing, extreme left leaning Democrat Party orchestrated by a Mafia infested Chicago mayor who lately moves the State legislature around like a chess player.

Mayor Daley has been trying to manufacture gun banning laws for decades, but had been stymied by a state legislature with enough Republicans in it to throw a monkey wrench into his anti-Constitutional plans. But, since the 2006 election, the state has fallen under the spell of the Democrat Party which easily controls all aspects of the state. And Daley controls the Democrat Party, for the most part, as nearly all the members of state government in key positions are from Daley’s old Chicago cabal.

Pike County is apparently afraid of what this Democrat controlled government will try to do now that the state GOP has made themselves utterly ineffective. In a 7 to 2 vote, the County Board passed the resolution which is to be forwarded onto the state government in Springfield and the rest of Illinois’ County governments.

Senator Thompson’s Address At Lincoln Club Dinner

Here is the entry Senator Thompson made at Townhall.com with the speech he made yesterday. This is why Senator Thompson is the perfect candidate for our times.
_______

Excerpt: Prepared Remarks for Speech to Lincoln Club Annual Dinner
By Senator Fred D. Thompson

So we meet again, and I’m honored, because I know we’re here for the same reasons: Love of our country and concern for our future.

A lot of Americans have these concerns tonight. They are concerned about the way things are going in our country right now. Some fear we may be in the first stages of decline. We’ve heard this malaise talk before.

Of course Iraq is a large part of it. Not only is it tough going, but the effort is besieged on all sides. From those playing the most crass kind of politics with it at home to criticism from around the world.

Even at home, as we enjoy the benefits from one of the best economies we’ve ever had, people seem uncertain; they raise concerns about global competition or a growing economic disparity among our citizens.

These are challenges. But how we react to them is more important than the challenges themselves. Some want us, to the extent possible, to withdraw from the world that presents us with so many problems, in the hope they will go away. Some would push us towards protectionist trade policies. Others see a solution in raising taxes and redistributing the income among our citizens.

Wrong on all counts. These are defensive, defeatist policies that have consistently been proven wrong. They are not what America is all about.

Trent Lott, STILL a Disaster for the GOP (And RINO Pal Voinovich, too)

-By Warner Todd Huston

More proof that Mississippi Senator Trent Lott, the former Democrat and the one responsible for making all Republicans look like racists — with help from the MSM — is at it again.

Lott is making noise that he would like to compromise with the Democrat Party over the safety of our troops and listen to talk of cutting and running from Iraq since President Bush has vetoed the Democrat’s latest Surrender bill.

Lott has been a capitulator to the Democrats for decades and his disastrous tenure as Majority Leader of the Senate several years ago was a fine example of how bad he is for the GOP. But, now he isn’t just damaging the Party as he usually does. NOW he is floating the possibility that he will allow the Democrat Party (his old home) to engineer an utter defeat in Iraq.
