Crisis Management, An Act Of Incompetence Or A Choice of Willfulness?

-By Dan Scott

The current economy is beset with many daunting problems, most of which were self inflicted wounds. Congress is debating a financial bailout plan that seems to have a huge dollar value to it in the neighborhood of $700 billion. No question that $700 billion is a serious pile of money and it has certainly piqued the ire of the taxpayer since they are the ones being told they have to fork it over. The MSM and government officials tell us daily that the world will end if Congress doesn’t pass a bailout plan. It certainly does seem the decade of the 2000’s has been a series of claimed catastrophes that demand our unqualified attention to act. The phrase, the price of inaction is greater than action has been bandied about frequently. It is almost as though some terrorist has put a gun to our heads, said you don’t get to read the fine print, sign here or I’ll pull the trigger. I don’t know about you but I dislike being threatened on every issue as though my life or my future depended on it.

This “Do it now or the earth is will come to an end” attitude smacks of crisis management using the tyranny of the urgent to force our acquiescence. It is as though we are being trained to accept every deal by government like Pavlov’s dog to respond in a certain manner. Speaking of coming catastrophes, this brings me to the curious silence by both the MSM and government officials regarding the 2008 federal budget deficit, the Medicare and Social Security financing imbalance this election season. If the current bailout could be described as the 700 pound gorilla we are currently grappling with, what about the 800 pound gorilla called the 2008 federal budget deficit, the 900 pound gorilla called Social Security and the equally big 900 pound gorilla called Medicare (Hospital Insurance Fund)? Is the MSM overly consumed with the problem de jour to the point of ignoring the other issues in context or is there something more to it? Are they attempting to train us to believe government is the answer to all of our problems by springing these upon us one at a time only when it becomes a crisis to just sign the paper?

You should note that every one of the monumental problems I have listed here is of government creation. On each and every one of them, the taxpayer will be called upon to pay more. The truly sad part is that every one of them is as totally avoidable as was the credit crisis caused by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Didn’t the Democrat politicians claim there was no need for reform years before when the solution could have made a difference and not cost so much money?

Either the people running the government are totally incompetent or they willfully intended the result because they knew they could get away with it. Let’s first address incompetence, is it possible the very same people (college educated) who have been in government for decades are just asleep at the switch? Is it possible Democrat Party leaders in the House and Senate awash in briefings from every department of the government every year missed the implications of their inaction? All of this done under the watchful eyes of the MSM selectively reporting their actions to the public. Does it strain credulity to believe a group of people were so incompetent as not to see the end results of their decisions? You be the judge. The other possibility is malevolent intent and they simply didn’t care who got hurt or paid in the process. Why? Because the taxpayer will always be there to bail them out since they have to, otherwise we all go down together. This type of policy I call MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction. The politician is like an irresponsible spouse using the family credit card, running up the accounts then saying we needed those items when check book doesn’t have enough to cover the bills. The concept of spending priorities doesn’t occur to them or it is just an inconvenience to their lifestyle so they place the responsibility for getting the money on someone else. A spouse who doesn’t behave as a partner with an equal stake in the outcome is dysfunctional and heading the marriage toward a nasty divorce. Fortunately for the taxpayers we can divorce the politicians who cease representing us for themselves but it takes a supreme act of unified will to do so, it’s called elections.

What is in this for the MSM? As we have seen, being the propaganda outlet for the Democrat Party gives them a unique hold over that group. If the MSM can choose a political party to support, making the Democrat Party beholding to them, the MSM can also choose the nominee as well. All non representative type governments require a complicit public mouthpiece to communicate to the public in order to control their subjects through disinformation. Let’s be clear – journalism is the act of informing, reporting all the facts with no agenda; propaganda is the act of disinformation, selectively reporting the facts to support an agenda. The MSM has been well practiced at the art of disinformation by being the propaganda outlet for the Democrat Party, naturally who will keep those important influential well paying jobs if Democrats are elected?

For how many years have we heard the line, the US is the richest country in the world, therefore we should be generous and spend (invest) on so and so…? Tell me please, with a $9.8 trillion national debt, are we rich? With an $800 billion budget deficit this year alone, are we rich? With unfunded mandates in the trillions for Social Security and Medicare threatening our children’s future, are we rich? At what point are we going to divorce these self serving politicians who claim they are in “public service” by living off the taxpayer like parasites? November 4th is coming soon, will you serve the Democrat Party the divorce papers or act like a battered spouse thinking you need them to get by in the world? The politicians have their gun to your head, will you sign the paper or will you pull the trigger on your own gun and bring this dysfunctional relationship to an end?
