Style Over Substance: ‘Office of Public Liaison’ Becomes ‘Office of Public Engagement’

-By Warner Todd Huston

Obama’s Long-time Chicago flunkie Valerie Jarrett is patting herself on the back for the wonderful “change” that she has brought to the White House. What is so wonderful? They’ve changed the name of one of the offices that works under the president’s authority. I guess changing the name of an office equals substantive change in Obama’s Washington. See? Change is wonderful. Unfortunately, it’s all style over substance, a sham meant as pretty window dressing.

Once captained by Karl Rove, Jarrett now runs the office whose charge is to coordinate media affairs for the White House. But it is no longer going to be called the Office of Public Liaison. So, siree. Now it will be known as the Office of Public Engagement. See? It’s all about the change and stuff.

You see, “outreach” is very important to President Obama. What is outreach? Who knows, but it sure sounds cool, doesn’t it?

The Chicago Sun Times reports this monumentally new newness as it was announced at Illinois Representative Jan Schakowski’s “Ultimate Women’s Power Lunch” spectacle on May 12.

Now check out this facile reasoning for changing the name of the office as offered by Jarrett staffer Tina Tchen:

“My predecessor during the Bush years: Not in the West Wing at all. So that also tells you sort of the difference between how important outreach is during the prior administration to the importance of outreach here,” Tchen said.

If that wasn’t nonsensical, doubespeak, what is? This is the caliber of folks that Obama has brought to Washington. It’s all about the feels good rhetoric. But substance? Bah! Who needs it?

They really do think everyone is stupid.
