New Bill Set to Give Illegals Voting Rights in New York City

-By Warner Todd Huston

Activists are pushing a new a new bill that would give illegal migrants living in New York City the right to vote in city elections starting in 2017.

According to the New York Post, Bertha Lewis, head of the Black Institute, said the bill is meant to allow all people to vote. “We want to expand the right to vote for everybody, not suppress the vote. What a radical idea,” she said.

The bill would give an estimated 1.3 million illegals in the Big Apple the right to vote for mayor, city comptroller, borough president, and city council members.

Saying, “People want to come out of the shadows,” Lewis insisted the new right would be a logical next step after Mayor de Blasio’s new program of issuing municipal I.D. cards to illegals was enacted.

“There will be a lot of support for it in the City Council. We want people to participate in civic life and be invested in what happens. It will lead to a healthier community,” Brooklyn Councilman Jumaane Williams added.

Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long, however, found the idea outrageous and noted that voting rights are supposed to be for legal citizens, not law breaking illegals. He also noted that it was just another way for liberals to “buy votes.”

If passed, the Big Apple wouldn’t be the first Democrat-controlled government to allow illegals to vote.

Just last year California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that would likely enfranchise people in the country illegally.

In October, Brown signed Assembly Bill 1461, the New Motor Voter Act, which will automatically register people to vote through the DMV, and could result in illegal aliens voting.

Then there are the sort of “stealth” movements to allow illegals to vote through motor voter registration and other measures to stop voter ID laws.

This month a coalition of pro-illegal migrant groups filed a lawsuit in a D.C. federal court to reverse a decision by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) that would allow states to enforce laws ensuring that only legal citizens can vote.

However, since the year 2000 bills giving illegals the right to vote have failed in states as varied as Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Texas.
