This afternoon in the Senate, a resolution condemning the hateful MoveOn.org ad was passed with overwhelming support. With a vote of 72 to condemn the obscene Move-On Petraus attack ad and 25 voting not to condemn the ad, a closely split Senate showed that it can act commandingly on a controversial issue without being so closely split along Party lines. 3 did not vote — Joe Biden (D-DE), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), and Barack Obama (D-IL)– but a large majority turned out against the resolution sponsored by John Cornyn of Texas.
Earlier In today’s press conference, president Bush attacked the “betray us” ad.
The ad, he said, “was disgusting. It was an attack not only on Gen. Petraeus but on the U.S. military. … I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democratic Party spoke out more strongly against that kind of ad.” The president’s conclusion: “Most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group — or are more afraid of irritating them — then they are of irritating the U.S. military. That was a sorry deal. … It’s one thing to attack me, but another to attack somebody like Gen. Petraeus.”
Who voted to SUPPORT the “disgusting” ad, though, is interesting to note.
Senator Hillary Clinton led the pack of those who could not see themselves clear to condemn this attack on the general they voted unanimously to support not but a few months ago. Senator Dodd, another one who imagines himself able to ascend to the White House, also voted to support extreme leftist vitriol like that of MoveOn.org.
Here is the list of the Senators who voted to support extremist attack ads.
Akaka (D-HI)
Binghaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Brown (D-OH)
Byrd (D-WV)
Clinton (D-NY)
Dodd (D-CT)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Inouye (D-HI)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Levin (D-MI)
Menendez (D-WA)
Murray (D-WA)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Rockefeller (D-WV)
Sanders (I-VT)
Schumer (D-NY)
Stabenow (D-MI)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Wyden (D-OR)
Pay attention Ohio. Your new Senator Sherrod Brown just voted to support this kind of hate in public discourse. New Jersey, Lautenberg, your aged also-ran Senator, voted for extremism, as well.
Next time, keep this in mind when voting for a Senator.
It is also extremely important to note which Democrat Senators voted against supporting MoveOn.org. In fact, some of the new Senators who were heavily supported by MoveOn.org money and voters ended up condemning the hand that feeds them!
Senators like Jon Tester of Montana and Jimmy “it ain’t my gun” Webb of Virginia voted to bite MoveOn.org’s hand.
So, it was an interesting resolution all the way around, one full of surprises.
