Who Watches The Watchers? – A Comic Book As Political Commentary
– By Warner Todd Huston

Why do contemporary artists all seem to think the end of the world is nigh? Why has art become a thing of ugliness, instead of light? With all the beautiful things we see every day, the delicacy of a flower, the turn of a woman’s arm, the grace of a bird in flight, we are treated only to the bizarre and horrid by our artists. These days we see sculptures that look like molecular mistakes writ large. We live in architecture that appears like a jumble of blocks thrown to the ground in the midst of a temper tantrum by a gigantic, petulant child. We view paintings that appear more accidental than planned. We have movies full of violence and anti-social behavior. On the radio we hear music that celebrates all the worst in man. We even have comic books that belittle heroism, that deconstruct the good and exceptional turning their heroes as cartoonishly flawed as the most obscene head case on the Jerry Springer Show.

When did entertainment turn so dark?

In the field of comic books, a 12 part series called Watchmen, created by the writer as a political commentary on its time, was hailed as having ” transcended its origins”, becoming a watershed in comics entertainment. This series, published in 1986, was at the front edge of a wave of comics in the early and mid 1980s that attempted to demolish the heroes of the past and replace them with a post-hero world of darkness and pessimism……….

  1. That’s a nice, typical holier than thou conservative m.o. – complain about other people’s behavior but then lie and be proud of it when it advances your goals. Jackass!

  2. Um, what behavior was being complained about by me?

Looks like more leftist twaddle coming from emotion insetead of intellect on your part.

  3. Hmm, let’s see…What are your last two columns?

Hugo Chavez – Fascist At Large!
Actor Jamie Foxx – A racist?

You are clearly fixated on other people’s behavior. If you’re going to pretend otherwise, you shouldn’t write this stuff down somewhere people can find it like … your blog. Shades of Pat Robertson saying he didn’t call for Hugo Chavez’ assassination, after a tape of him saying so was broadcast.

I’d likely be amused by any attempt you make to state otherwise, so, let’s hear it! ‘Cause jackasses can be funny too.

  4. Ha, ha, ha, ha….

I should take lessons of propriety from a person who calls himself “anonymous”???

Here’s a thought… those who CAN, do. Those who cannot just sit around and snipe without becoming directly involved or even having the guts to stand up and take responsibility for himself. I DO. What do YOU do?

Never mind… we already KNOW the answer to that one, Mr. “anonymous”.

Now toddle on back to the kiddie porn sites you are usually looking at and leave the commentary to the adults.

  5. There’s nothing funny about child porn, so unfortunately I’m not amused by your response.

But it is so typical of your type:
    1. Criticize other people’s moral failings, and then lie to advance your own agenda.

    2. When confronted with a direct response to your hypocrisy, insult the critic through stereotypes (the supposed “leftist twaddle”).

    3. When confronted with direct evidence of how self-contradictory your argument is (from your own frickin’ blog), do not respond to the argument but instead further insult your opponent and try to take the focus off of yourself, where it belongs (because you lied and were a hypocrite).

    4. Finally, you show a preoccupation with sexual deviance all too common in moralistic right-wingers. You’re the one thinking about child porn, not me. Priests are the ones making headlines for raping children, and their dioceses paying millions of dollars for covering things up. 98 percent of pedophiles are heterosexual.

Here’s a frickin’ clue: Child porn jokes are NEVER funny.

  6. Wow, it gets creepier and creepier. “Lil’ fella”? In response to a comment about how creepy it is that you’re making jokes about child porn? And I’ve bored you so much that you felt obliged to go to the Comicon boards and cherry-pick mine and several other posts?

Not to mention, you haven’t responded to anything I’ve written here. Your debating skills seem not to have evolved beyond “I know you are, but what am I?”

PS – You criticize someone for posting comments on your blog anonymously … after you lamely try to post anonymously on the Comicon message boards to draw attention to your essay? That is pretty hypocritical, no?
