Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor — and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be — That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks — for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation — for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war — for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed — for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted — for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

Rush Limbaugh really hit the nail on the head in Tuesday’s show with his commentary maintaining that the Democrat’s agenda is 100 percent invested in destroying the trust America has in our elections.

Citing the messes in Florida and Arizona, and harkening back to the year 2000 and Bush v Gore, Limbaugh noted that the Democrat Party’s agenda is to make every American distrust and hate our electoral system by an extended and perpetual war against the legitimacy of our elections.

The conservative talk show giant delved into the Democrat Party’s agenda on his Tuesday show.

“Are you tired of that mantra yet? ‘We must count every vote,’ as though somebody is trying not to count every vote,” Limbaugh said at the top of the segment.

“You could say the same thing about Arizona, except Martha McSally has conceded and her number one praiseworthy advocate is Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, who says this is how Republicans need to act,” Limbaugh said. “When they lose, they need to concede. Obviously, McSally cares about being a good citizen and being a good American, and she did what all good Republicans should do, and that is concede.”

But, Limbaugh wondered, which party is it trying to destroy our system? Well, it isn’t the GOP, that’s for sure.

Veterans Day, 2018: Remembering Our Beloved Veterans

America is a singularly different nation where it concerns our military veterans, and not just on Veterans Days. We love them. We even have a national holiday to honor them. This is not so in most of the rest of the world. Elsewhere soldiers are not as loved as they are here in these great United States.

Is that because the United States is the Sparta of the world, loving war more than anything else? Hardly. In fact it’s because our soldiers bring peace wherever they go, not perpetual war.

In other countries, soldiers are often the dregs of society, living off the people while at the same time lording over them with machine guns and violence.

In other countries the military is feared by both the people and the government because all too often the army is used to take power and steal away the government for its own aggrandizement. There is no accident that the word “coup” is one rarely spoken in the USA unless when viewing foreign news.

In other countries when people see soldiers they fear them, they loathe them. In other countries they don’t want to sit near soldiers on public transportation, they avoid eye contact. Here we shake their hand and ask if they need anything.

In the USA we respect our soldiers because as a rule they respect We The People as much as they respect the law.

When an American sees a soldier an American feels pride, not fear. When an American leans of another’s service, an American is compelled to thank him for that service.

So, from us to you, our dear military veterans, we thank you. We thank you for putting your lives on hold while serving us, while making sure we are safe and able to go about our business unafraid of danger, and time and again for putting your own safety at risk.

‘Blue Wave’ Turns to a Trickle in 2018 Midterm Elections

The media failed once again to predict a mass takeover of Washington by Democrats as their hoped-for “blue wave” turned into a red trickle when Republicans unexpectedly won in key areas like Texas, Florida, Indiana, and Missouri.

While the Democrat Party did take control of the House of Representatives with a 34 seat gain giving the Democrats a 28-seat majority (with a few more seats still to be determined), it is nowhere near the 50 and even 60 seats many prognosticators expected. Further, the Republicans kept control of the U.S. Senate up three more seats for their majority — something else few expected.

Even CNN’s sold-out left-winger, Jake Tapper, said “This is not a blue wave,” during his election coverage on Tuesday night.

Also, it should be remembered that this election is not exactly a full refutation of Donald Trump. The fact is, since the early 1900s, the party in power has lost between 15 and 35 seats in a president’s first midterm election.

Contrast last night’s results to Obama’s first midterms in 2010 when he lost 67 Democrat seats to Republicans. Now THAT was a refutation of a president!

‘Mail Bomber’ Cesar Sayoc is Clearly NOT a Republican

The strangest facts about ‘Mail Bomber’ Cesar Sayoc show He’s a not really a Republican at all.

Several strange facts about “mail bomber” Cesar Sayoc seem to show that he is just a misfit goofball, but not a real Trump supporter or Republican. Everything about this guy screams “misfit” as opposed to “real conservative.” He just seems like an outsider who has been searching for himself for his entire life. And Trump was only his latest attempt to fit in somewhere and with someone. He is not really a political person and doesn’t seem to really know anything about politics. He is not by rights “one of us” on the right. It’s just that simple.

Political Registration

First and foremost is the fact that he apparently only became a Republican in 2016 when Trump ran for office. In some Internet traces Sayoc even listed himself as a Democrat before 2016.

For instance, on his MyLife.com bio he called himself a Democrat who was born in 1962.

In addition, one man who worked alongside Sayoc for years, Florida resident Scott Meigs, said that Sayoc never talked about politics at all until 2016. Then he became obsessed with Trump.

Then there is his van. Sure it looks like a big Trump supporter owns the van as its windows are chocked with stickers pushing pro-GOP, pro-Trump, and conservative memes (such as a sticker that says “CNN Sucks”). But there are too many indications that the whole thing was not assembled by a real conservative.

Now the left is saying that if you are a man attracted to women, but you don’t find a man pretending to be a woman attractive, you are a bigot.

You read that right, the left has finally found a “love” it doesn’t love.

What do I mean by that? Well, what is the first thing that radical gays tell you when they are trying to justify their push for gay marriage, for instance? They say “we should be allowed to love who ever we want,” and they also say “We have a right to be ‘who we are.'”

Ah, but wait. Now, if you are heterosexual and only want to love a natural-born member of the opposite sex — and not one created in a doctor’s office — well, THAT love is now to be deemed “bigotry.”

So, apparently “love” is not the justification for the left’s deviancy, after all.

All of this becomes clear with the latest “study” that was aimed at justifying the mental illness of transgenderism.

In June, left-winger Zhana Vrangalova wrote a piece attacking straight people for their bigotry on the gay website Them.us. Vrangalova touted the “work” from a couple of researchers who found that the majority of so-called cisgender people (that would be normal people) would never consider dating a transgender person.

This is classic: Death By Entitlement.

But I’m not going to rag on these two people who met with a tragic end. The author correctly assesses why they died. Even some NY Times readers had it right.

Besides, the virtuous and laudatory beliefs of youth don’t deserve to be denigrated, even if one of those beliefs led to their demise.

However, this story has a very powerful message about how one’s belief systems, that lack evidence, can be dangerous for you.

Liberal ideology, for example, teaches that young blacks males are as non-violent as any other race. But inconvenient data says otherwise. Believe the data and act accordingly. Jesse Jackson does!

It’s not necessarily about liberals. I warn my friend, for example, to be cautious as he travels all over the world. He’s conservative.

But it is their blog entries about their travels and beliefs that provides a marvelous window for us to see how and why this ended tragically.

As the cliche goes, we’ve seen this movie before.

Connecticut’s Democrat Senator, Chris Murphy, said that conservatives should be shut out of social media, proving that he is not an American, but is, instead, an un-American fascist.

On Monday, Murphy announced his Chinese-styled censorship of the people’s right to free speech saying he feels people who aren’t in the proper party should be shut down.

“Infowars is the tip of a giant iceberg of hate and lies that uses sites like Facebook and YouTube to tear our nation apart. These companies must do more than take down one website. The survival of our democracy depends on it,” Murphy tweeted on August 6.

The president’s son was serious alarmed by this fascist proclamation by a sitting U.S. Senator.

“A Democrat Senator openly admitting that Big Tech’s censorship campaign is really about purging all conservative media. How long before Big Tech and their Democrat friends move to censor and purge @BreitbartNews, @DailyCaller and other conservatives voices from their platforms?” Donald Trump, Jr., tweeted on Tuesday.

Trump, Jr., is right. This is a chilling example of how far the Democrat Party has fallen from American ideals.

Some of the best “popcorn” moments in Washington have largely flown under the radar as not many have noticed the repeated body blows that President Donald Trump has Delivered to the greedy, un-American government unions and this week he did it again.

I say “popcorn moment” because Trump’s repeated attacks on the unions makes you want to break out the popcorn to watch the Democrats get angrier and angrier as Trump undermines their source of union money income.

I guess there is just so much going on that the media hasn’t spent much time on the story, but Trump’s work to force the collapse of the rapacious government unions has been epic and unprecedented. No other president has hurt the unions so badly.

The latest is the Trump administration’s effort to cancel the free office space that Barack Obama gave to the unions. You see, during the fetid Obama regime, government union officials were allowed to set up shop in government buildings without paying a red cent in rent.

So, what we had were thousands of union goons given free office space in buildings the U.S. taxpayers are funding.When Trump came to office, he apparently wondered why union officials were allowed to use tax-funded office space free of charge?

In a company conference call, John Schnatter uttered the word “nigger” in a “role-playing exercise to prevent future public-relations disasters” for the company.

But the “role-playing exercise to prevent future public-relations disasters” created a public-relations disaster.

Liberal insanity still prevails.

EXHIBIT A: Recall, Detective Mark Fuhrman was crucified on the witness stand for using that word. But liberal attorney Marcia Clark was too afraid to rehabilitate her witness by allowing Fuhrman to explain that he used that word in an audition, merely to sell his script to a movie producer.

Instead — like the cowardly, hair-brained liberal she was — Clark distanced herself from Furman and that politically incorrect word, thereby leading to OJ’s not guilty verdict.

EXHIBIT B:Recall comedian Andrew Dice Clay’s premier about 20 years ago, role-playing on stage as a brash, misogynistic, goombah. His use of vulgar words and epithets of women, gays, and minorities was intended to showcase the character’s bigotry and ignorance — to laugh AT HIM. But the silly libs and MSM destroyed him in that politically correct era.

The 1970s was a more enlightened time. Carol O’Conner played a similar character in the TV series, All in the Family. He was nominated for 9 Emmy Awards for lead actor, and won 5 times. Unlike Clay, no one accused O’Conner of being an ignorant bigot.

You need look no farther than the spin Roll Call put on a story about Vice President Mike Pence replying to liberal demands that the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement be abolished.

For several weeks, now, a growing list of left-wing Democrats have lighted upon a new campaign issue and have begun braying to “abolish ICE.” This week the Trump administration has finally begun to push back against the outrageous demand. President Trump mentioned the left’s push to eliminate one of our chief immigration enforcement agencies at a rally in Montana. But VP Pence also spoke about it from Washington on Friday.

Pretending to report on Pence’s comments, the DC-based newspaper Roll Call jumped to the story with a Friday piece entitled, “Pence to Democrats: Stop ‘Spurious Attacks on ICE.”

The very first paragraph of this laughable excuse for news is a master class in left-wing spin all aimed at making Pence look like the bad guy.

Today we celebrate Independence Day, the day we stepped out on our own and formally declared our intention to become our own nation and not a vassal state of England. Unfortunately, too many people keep calling this day “the July Fourth holiday.” But, we don’t celebrate a number or a month. We celebrate our independence as a nation. So, I urge everyone to stop disrespecting our nation’s birthday by calling it “July Fourth” and here is why…

It is well known that John Adams had imagined that July second would be the day that future generations of Americans would remember as their day of independence from England, the nation’s birthday, if you will. It was, after all, on the second that it was proclaimed “(T)hat these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”

But it was two days later that those gathered in defiance to the King of England declared a “Declaration of Independency” thereby adopting the famed document that carefully delineated the natural rights by which they claimed independence followed by a list of grievances that would explain why they invoked those rights.

So what are we celebrating? Is it our birth as a nation or are we celebrating the document of Independence? Early celebrations were mixed and a bit confused on that point. Not only that but celebrations on July fourth weren’t even that common for quite some time after the Revolution was over. At first, not many felt a need to celebrate something that had only recently happened and was over. It was time to move on from war in many American’s eyes.

Then again, not many Americans had much interest in the Declaration itself until the 1790s when the emerging parties began to vie for bragging rights over who wrote it. The Democratic Republicans proudly held that their leader, Thomas Jefferson, was the author of the document while the Federalists reminded everyone that their leader, John Adams, was also a member of the committee that drafted the document and that he, as much as Jefferson, had his stamp on the Declaration of Independence.

242 Independence Days and Counting, But What Does it all Mean?

Today America enjoys the celebration of 241 years as a nation by noting the day we declared our independence from England. Sadly, that celebration has, for too many, become the “Fourth of July” holiday, a day of picnics, rote parades, “white sales,” and for some a day off work. Of course, we should not and don’t celebrate any “July Fourth” holiday. We celebrate Independence Day, the day we formally separated from our parent nation and took those first unsteady steps into the world as a nation of our own.

So, what is this Independence Day all about? Well, for one thing we celebrate the gifts that our Creator has given us. That’s right, our Founding Fathers started this nation celebrating the gifts of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and those natural rights given to us by God, rights that no man or government can take away from us, rights no man can legitimately prevent us from observing.

Contrary to the God-averse America we have devolved into, the Declaration mentions God, the Creator, or the divine multiple times and the Founders rested their entire claim of liberty and freedom on the claim that no government can legitimately take away the natural rights that mankind should and must enjoy.

John Adams was one of the truly indispensable men among our founding fathers. He was the man that wrote one of the first fully written out Constitutions in human history when he wrote the Constitution of Massachusetts. He wrote a seminal book on government that helped inform the founders of our nation, he was an ambassador to France and other European nations, he was our first vice president, our second president, and more.

In fact, Adams was at the center of one of the incidents that set the tone for our national character. When the Redcoats responsible for the Boston Massacre were put under arrest, John Adams stepped forward to represent the Redcoats in court. Many of his fellow patriots were amazed at this offer, some even incensed at Adams for doing so. But Adams said that the rule of law was far more important than merely making points with the home crowd and the Redcoats deserved to have competent representation.

Another Blatant Case: This is How Liberals Lie About This Immigration Debate

On Thursday another story about detained immigrant minors broke, this time about a group alleging that they were abused while being held. But the way the story was reported was a perfect example of how the media lies about this immigration debate because while the leftist media has blamed Trump for it, they neglected to mention the incident happened during the Obama years.

The liberal media has continued its hourly assault on President Donald Trump with its constant stream of lies about America’s immigration policy. But Thursday also saw this new wrinkle in the news of the day. It appears that a few illegal aliens filed a lawsuit alleging that they were abused when they were in detention as minors.

The story came from the Associated Press and some of the allegations are shocking:

Multiple detainees say the guards stripped them of their clothes and strapped them to chairs with bags placed over their heads.

“Whenever they used to restrain me and put me in the chair, they would handcuff me,” said a Honduran immigrant who was sent to the facility when he was 15 years old. “Strapped me down all the way, from your feet all the way to your chest, you couldn’t really move. … They have total control over you. They also put a bag over your head. It has little holes; you can see through it. But you feel suffocated with the bag on.”

In addition to the children’s first-hand, translated accounts in court filings, a former child-development specialist who worked inside the facility independently told The Associated Press this week that she saw kids there with bruises and broken bones they blamed on guards. She spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to publicly discuss the children’s cases.

According to the AP, these illegal alien kids had been sent to the facilities in question because authorities suspected them of being members of the criminal gang MS-13.

Juneteenth: Today is the Anniversary When Republicans Outlawed the Democrat Run KKK Terror Group

It is indisputable that the Republican Party is really the party of civil rights, not the Democrats. And today we have one more example of that truism with the 145th anniversary of the Republican Party’s essential outlawing of the Ku Klux Klan, the Democrat Party’s domestic terror group.

The actions against the Klan stemmed from an outrageous massacre of nearly 300 blacks perpetrated by white, Democrat Klan members in Louisiana in 1868.

On September 28, 1868 — three years after the Confederate south lost the civil war — a mob of marauding whites rampaged through Opelousas, Louisiana and massacred nearly 300 blacks who were Republican voters.

The outrage began when white, Democrat KKK members attacked the white owner of a Republican-leaning newspaper. The newspaper editor, a former school teacher for black students, was defended by several black friends during the attack and this action enraged the mob further sending them on a day-long spree of murder and mayhem.

The attack was so outrageous that the Republican Party acted to essentially ban the KKK. By April 20, 1871, the GOP passed a law banning the oppression perpetrated by the KKK when President Ulysses Grant and Congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act, also known as the third Enforcement Act. The law established penalties against anyone who tried to deprive any other citizen the benefit of equal protection under the laws of the United States. The law also gave the president the power to use the military to ensure that the rights of blacks were upheld.

This interest in civil rights carried all the way to the 1964 Civil Rights bill that was passed with the overwhelming support of Republicans.

Top Liberal Media Fake News Stories of the Trump Era

A few years ago I wrote a piece chronicling the “top 50” examples of liberal media bias with examples stretching back some sixty years. But in this hyperfast age of Trump with the media working overtime to destroy our president, examples of bias and “fake news” are coming at us so thick and fast that it is hard to keep up with them all. But in this article, I will present some of the leading examples of fake news perpetrated as real information by the left-wing media in the age of Trump.

In the 1930s, 40s, and 50s the media landscape was without a doubt a more ideologically balanced part of our culture. Each city used to have several newspapers and radio stations; some leaned Democrat, some Republican and others more independent. But starting in the 1960s, the media began to consolidate around liberalism as more and more “journalists” graduated J-schools as liberals and thence began infecting the media landscape with a singular, left-wing ideology. This drift to the left in journalism schools reflected the wider veer leftward of the university scene as a whole.

Then came Watergate which spawned a new wave of “journalists” who felt that their job was to attack the power structure — whatever it might be — as opposed to reporting the why, who, when, and where of any particular story. Instead of normal reporting, these new “journalists” felt that their job was to destroy the right and to use their stories to push leftism. Gone was the just-the-facts-style of journalism, replaced by agenda journalism.

This skewed, fake style of “journalism” became ubiquitous by 2000 when the media worked to cancel George W. Bush’s Electoral College win and then as it attacked Bush daily. It grew apace as it rose to deify Barack Obama, one of the most anti-American presidents in U.S. history, and has since become a fever swamp in its desire to destroy Donald J. Trump today.

Liberals coined the term “fake news” in order to use it as a weapon to undermine any of the few conservative sources of news out there. Bodyguard of Chicago’s Most Famous Anti-Gun Priest Caught with Illegal Gun

Chicago’s most famous anti-gun Catholic priest was just hit with some embarrassing news when his bodyguard was arrested for illegally carrying a gun.

Loudmouth priest Father Michael Pfleger found the unwelcome news late in May when his bodyguard, Henry Eugene Hale, 35, was arrested outside the Father’s church. Police found that Hale did not have an Illinois firearm card or a concealed carry license and was therefore carrying the gun illegally.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department told Chicago City Wire that officers confronted Hale at the church at 1200 W. 78th Place when “they saw him holding a firearm.”

Illinois records show that Hale allowed his Firearms Identification Card (FOID) expire last year and did not renew it. He was also a certified security guard in the state, but allowing his FOID to lapse put that certification in jeopardy. According to his employment record he was once disciplined, but there are no details as to why.

A local policeman’s blog noted that Hale has been a member of Pfleger’s security team for quite sometime. The unnamed police officer who runs the blog also noted that “Pfleger and his minions called 006th district nonstop to try to get the guy out of arrest.”

Ike’s D-Day Letter to the Troops, June 6, 1944

With all the weakling college students whining about “safe spaces” today, it is incumbent upon us to remember that there were no safe spaces on the beaches of Normandy.

As the troops prepared to shove off, many for their final act, commander in chief Dwight Eisenhower distributed a letter to buck up the spirit of the troops and to remind them of how important their efforts was.

For me, Memorial Day happens twice within a week. The first, the official holiday at the end of May, is quickly reinforced a week later, every June 6: D-Day.

Of all the wartime anniversaries, none strike me quite like D-Day–the invasion of Normandy, the liberation of France, the final push to defeat Nazi Germany. It was June 6, 1944, a date that sticks like December 7, like July 4, like September 11. The mix of extreme sorrow and triumph has been unforgettably replicated on film by Steven Spielberg in the stunning opening of Saving Private Ryan.

What must it have been like to be among those first waves at the beaches? Indescribable, simply indescribable.

Liberals are no longer destroying California bit-by-bit. They have sped their destruction up to a faster clip and conservative actor James Woods just showed some proof of the frenetic pace.

Usually, the left in California, especially the Hollywood elite, have succeeded in secluding themselves away from the troubles the average citizen faces every day, but Woods shows that even the liberal elites are starting to be forced to confront the troubles they have wrought with their foolhardy, self-destructive policies.

Liberals have allowed the once great state of California to devolve into the worst dystopian mess in the nation (though Illinois is desperately trying to beat the west coasters). But, now even the elites are finding their territory overrun with the homeless and illegals and conservative actor James Woods revealed a shocking video outside the famed studios of TV mogul Oprah Winfrey to show it.

“This is the sidewalk next to Oprah Winfrey’s studio in West Hollywood,” Woods tweeted on May 25. “She has done extensive, and truly beautiful renovations to The Lot. Brand new apartments were built across the street. The new resident families cannot walk their children on the sidewalk to the local school.”

Along with the tweet, Woods added a video showing row after row of tents used by illegals and homeless people living on the very sidewalk outside Oprah’s studios.

Conservative Tribune reported the major trouble that California is seeing with the growing number of homeless people in the state…

Remembering Thousands of Americans Buried in U.S. Military Cemeteries Across the World

As we prepare to celebrate Memorial Day to pause in thanks for the sacrifices made by millions of Americans who died while fighting to preserve freedom, a documentary called “These Hallowed Grounds” reminds us that our war dead are not just interred here at home, but are spread across the world on battlefields almost lost to the memory of far too many of us.

When we think of our military cemeteries, those final resting places of so many American heroes, we usually think of Arlington National Cemetery, certainly. But do we think of the hundreds of American military cemeteries in such places as France, the Philippines, and other nations across the world? Sadly, not many of us do.

If you are like many of us, you may not be very well informed about all the many American cemeteries erected to memorialize our legions of war dead. To correct that deficit the PBS documentary “These Hallowed Grounds” is an excellent way to learn about these bucolic and solemn memorials.

Most Americans know of the World War Two cemetery at Omaha Beach, Normandy, site of one of the 1944 D-Day landings. But there are some twenty-one other cemeteries in eight other countries memorializing our dead from World Wars One and Two and the documentary tells the powerful tale of many of them.

Our many war cemeteries are maintained by the U.S. government’s American Battle Monuments Commission and contain monuments to some 125,000 American war dead. The names of another 94,000 missing soldiers are inscribed into the Walls Of The Missing at these locations and this film takes viewers on an important journey across the world to see and learn about them.

To honor our troops for this year, I am going to share this story about their mettle. What follows are excerpts from remarks by Marine Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly made to the Semper Fi Society of St. Louis on November 13, 2010. While leading his platoon on a combat patrol, Kelly’s son, Marine 1st Lt. Robert Michael Kelly, had been killed in action four days earlier in Sangin, in southern Afghanistan. Lt. Kelly was only 29-years-old.

Giving Thanks for Our Warriors

“Those with less of a sense of service to the nation never understand it when men and women of character step forward to look danger and adversity straight in the eye, refusing to blink, or give ground, even to their own deaths… No, they are not victims but are warriors, your warriors, and warriors are never victims regardless of how and where they fall. Death, or fear of death, has no power over them. Their paths are paved by sacrifice, sacrifices they gladly make… for you….

“Two years ago when I was the commander of all U.S. and Iraqi forces, in fact, the 22nd of April 2008, two Marine infantry battalions, 1/9 ‘The Walking Dead,’ and 2/8 were switching out in Ramadi… Two Marines, Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter, 22 and 20 years old respectively, one from each battalion, were assuming the watch together at the entrance gate of an outpost that contained a makeshift barracks housing 50 Marines… Yale was a dirt poor mixed-race kid from Virginia with a wife and daughter, and a mother and sister who lived with him and he supported as well. He did this on a yearly salary of less than $23,000. Haerter, on the other hand, was a middle-class white kid from Long Island. They were from two completely different worlds… But they were Marines, combat Marines, forged in the same crucible of Marine training, and because of this bond they were brothers as close, or closer, than if they were born of the same woman.

The Illinois General From the Civil War Who Helped Create Memorial Day

A few years after the Civil War as the nation started upon its long road toward reconciliation, rebuilding, and healing the wife of one of the war’s union generals noticed the touching devotion of Confederate widows, wives and their children as each year they came together to place flowers and little flags at the graves of their fallen. Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan was so moved by the devotion she witnessed that she urged her husband, Illinois General John A. “Blackjack” Logan, to look into creating what was to become Memorial Day.

General Logan was a Senator from Illinois and eventually became a candidate for Vice President on the 1884 Republican ticket, losing to Grover Cleveland and another Illinoisan, Vice President Adlai Stevenson. But before all that Logan was instrumental in creating Decoration Day, the celebration of the nation’s war dead that eventually became Memorial Day.

The following is the general order that Logan issued in 1868.

General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868

The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

With Memorial Day weekend here patriots may want to spend a few hours this weekend remembering some of our greatest war films. Here we will talk briefly about over thirty war films, some stir the patriot’s blood, others are amusing, many harrowing, still more are foreboding with a subtle anti-war message. While everyone has their own favorites list — and yours may not be here — all presented here are a great watch.

Band of Brothers

(2001)

Starring Damian Lewis as Major Dick Winters, the 2001 mini-series Band of Brothers is probably the most faithful film project about World War Two and is a must-see for any war movie fan. At 12 hours in length, it is certainly a commitment to watch, but a viewer is well rewarded at the end and is an experience that will stick with viewers for the rest of their lives. This is as close as you can come to experiencing the camaraderie, deprivation, terror, and hell of war without actually being in one.

Patton

(1970)

Unapologetically patriotic and hardnosed, the George C. Scott vehicle Patton is a tour de force of stirring military action punched by an incredible soundtrack. The nearly three-hour film follows the life, war, and untimely death of WWII General George S. Patton that stands as one of the classic war films of all time.

The Longest Day

(1962)

The Academy Award-winning The Longest Day can’t help but bring you to the edge of your seat as the film follows one of the toughest battles in U.S. history as Allied forces landed on the coast of France during the D-Day landings. It starred nearly every major Hollywood star of the day including John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Red Buttons, Peter Lawford, Eddie Albert, Jeffrey Hunter, Rod Steiger, George Segal, Robert Wagner, and many, many more. Filmed in black and white, the lack of color makes it all the more gritty and inspiring as the Allies push the Nazis back beginning the push into Europe that would eventually topple Hitler’s regime.
