Wrong Answer to the Ebola Question

-By Chuck Busch

President Obama called an emergency cabinet meeting to decide on how to address the looming Ebola emergency after a Liberian man died and two of his attending nurses contracted the disease. The seriousness of the situation has settled on Obama such that he actually cancelled several fundraising events to attend the meeting. The country will know if an even greater crisis develops if Obama has to delay a golf outing.

After meeting for several hours, the president emerged from the discussions with this gem of statement that may well be remembered, perhaps bitterly, for many decades to come, “The best way to contain the Ebola virus in the US is to control it in Liberia.”

Aside from the obvious politically correct framing of the statement and probably because of it, this is a completely non-sensible and foolhardy assessment of the situation.

The United State’s national health can in no way be linked to or predicated on the success of the Liberian government to overcome the plague in their own country.

The only sane thing to do is to immediately ban all incoming flights from countries experiencing this plague and quarantine those who are already here. I cannot imagine any logical reason why this administration feels it must allow these flights to continue, except for some liberal far-fetched global village notion of fairness and not wishing to offend certain African nations.

Certainly, we should do what we can to help these beleaguered peoples, but sending our military into disease infested countries is questionable. This is just another example of the misuse of our military forces that Democrat administrations seem so fond of doing.

But these commonsense obvious measures do not fit the Obama globalist view of America’s role in the world. In his mind, America is not isolated and can not act independently regarding events developing in other parts of the world. The US must act in accordance with UN initiatives for the “common good” of the earth.

While the US can not and should not completely withdraw to within its own borders, this is one dire situation that demands that US interests and the safety of its people take clear priority over any other international concerns.
