Republican candidates have simply got to define suitable language for their personal views on life at conception according to their own convictions or the biblical standard apart from some legislative or political compromise that cannot be truthfully misconstrued. And Republican party leaders should not make a habit of shunning those candidates such as Todd Akin and now Richard Murdock just because they embrace a rationally consistent view of the sanctity of all life and their statements have been distorted by the opposition.
Holding to the position that God is the author of all life including conception in a rape case, is not a political liability in a nation that espouses, “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among those are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”. This is especially true considering that the Republican Party’s platform encompasses a very strong pro-life stance not specifying an exemption for rape or incest.
Not only is this view “politically correct” according to our nation’s founding documents and the Republican party’s social values, it is certainly not theologically awkward either. To believe that God’s creative power is not operating in nature even in a rape situation is to infer that God is not involved in some manner in every drama that is unfolding on earth. This is a fallen world, but God is at work redeeming those destructive and desperate conditions man has created for himself. Just as Joseph’s captivity in Egypt was tragic, God used that circumstance to provide much good for all of Israel. (Genesis 50:20)
Rape is an evil thing, but God can bring good out of that traumatic experience and restore lives. The bible or human history is replete with stories of people whose origin was the result of rape or adultery or fornication or who even survived an abortion, but went on to lead productive satisfying lives as God had intended for them. Ephesians 2:10 reads, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. “ God has a redemptive purpose for every life.
