Arie Friedman is seeking the Republican nomination for the seat opened by the retirement this summer of State Sen. Susan Garrett (D). The newly drawn district takes in southeast Lake County and, in northern Cook County, parts of Glencoe, Northbrook, Palatine and several communities in Wheeling Township.

Friedman, a pediatrician practicing in Lake County, would be the only physician elected to the Senate in memory.

Friedman has focused his campaign on last January’s hikes in the personal and corporate income tax rates and their effect on the jobs climate here. He has noted that Illinois has lost jobs every month since the personal income tax rate was increased by 67% and the corporate rate some 45%. “Illinois led the nation in job losses in the month of July, when we lost some 24,900 in just one month. The overall jobs toll has been more than 105,000 since the Quinn/Madigan/Cullerton tax hikes were enacted,” Friedman stated.

“I am determined to change Springfield,” he said. “That is why I am running.

“Our leaders in Springfield cannot continue to borrow more and spend like there’s no tomorrow. The debt is already causing taxes so high that too many families and businesses are leaving the state, or choosing to not locate here ,” he declared.

“We need to get spending under control, reform our worker’s compensation and civil litigation systems, and repeal these burdensome tax increases if we are to stop the hemorrhaging of jobs and population from our state,” Friedman said. “We’re already losing a Congressional district to states which lure our citizens by offering the opportunity to build a better life for their families. It’s past time for Springfield to wake up to the reality that our state’s fiscal recklessness is capsizing the ship of state.”

Dr. Arie Friedman and his wife Michelle are parents of five children and live in Highland Park. A graduate of the University of Chicago, he finished at the top of his medical school class at the University of Illinois Medical Center in 1998. He opened a pediatric medicine practice in Lake County in 2001. Prior to attending medical school, Dr. Friedman served in the United States Navy as a helicopter pilot. During his seven years of active duty, Dr. Friedman flew SH-60B Seahawk helicopters out of Naval Air Station North Island, California, from which he deployed twice, including once to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Storm.
