Reason #13 to Vote Out Phil Hare

From the Schilling for Congress campaign (17th District)…

Reason #13: Despite record deficits, Phil Hare believes there has been deficit reduction on his watch.

EAST MOLINE, IL–The Bobby Schilling for Congress campaign unveiled the 13th reason in their “20 Reasons to Vote Out Phil Hare” series. The series focuses on Phil Hare’s record and explains why he does not deserve re-election. The campaign will release one reason per day up until the election.

Reason #13 to Vote Phil Hare Out of Office: Despite record deficits, Phil Hare believes there has been deficit reduction on his watch.

Another week, another reality-defying statement made by Congressman Phil Hare. First, Phil Hare said he would “debunk the myth that this country was in debt,” even though the national debt currently stands at $13.6 trillion. Then, Phil Hare said the U.S. economy was “headed in the right direction,” despite 9.6% unemployment and four straights months of job loss. Now Phil Hare believes that Congress has “already done some deficit reduction,” even though we experienced record setting deficits in 2009 and 2010.

When asked by the Quad City Times about the sacrifices and changes 17th District voters can expect as Congress deals with our unsustainable federal deficit, Congressman Hare responded, “I think we’ve already done some deficit reduction.”

Federal Deficit By The Numbers

  • 2007 – The deficit was $161 billion or 1.2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
  • 2008 – The deficit was $407 billion or 3.2% of the GDP.
  • 2009 – The deficit was $1.416 trillion or 10% of the GDP.
  • 2010 – The deficit was $1.294 trillion or 8.9% of GDP.

In both 2009 and 2010, we had sky-high record deficits above $1 trillion. The national debt currently stands at $13.6 trillion, which represents a $44,000 share for every American. National unemployment is 9.6%, while unemployment in Illinois stands at 9.9%. These troubling numbers are not a “myth” and certainly not indicative of a country “headed in the right direction.”

Bobby Frederick, communications director for the Bobby Schilling campaign, said that Illinois cannot afford another two years of Phil Hare.

“It’s hard to address job loss, the crippling national debt, and the ballooning budget deficits when elected officials like Phil Hare don’t recognize that we have a problem in the first place,” said Frederick. “It’s time to send someone to Congress who has managed a business, created jobs, and balanced a budget. We cannot afford two more years of the same old status quo, out-of-touch representation. Bobby Schilling is the change we need.”

Bobby Schilling, a native of Rock Island, graduated from Alleman High School and attended Black Hawk College. Schilling, a local business owner, is the Republican candidate for the 17th Congressional District in Illinois. Bobby is running on a platform of bringing jobs and real representation back to the 17th District. Earlier this year, Schilling conducted a 34-city “Bob’s for Jobs” tour, where he met with voters and employers all across the 17th District. Schilling was recently named an official ‘Young Gun’ by the National Republican Congressional Committee in their Young Guns program of top tiered races.
