The leaders of the Democrat Party in Illinois are elected by their voters. The leaders of the Republicans are not. And the GOP leaders want to keep it that way!
So, once again, we see GOP leader Tom Cross pushing back efforts to give S.B.600 a proper debate and a chance at a floor vote. We reported on Thursday that S.B.600 was slated for a third reading and a possible debate and vote in Springfield, but privilege spoke against the bill once again.
Tom Cross blamed the Democrats. He said they were trying to create “distractions” and that they were “meddling” in Republican affairs by supporting the effort to bring S.B.600 to the floor. Cross said it was “punishment.”
Notice that last claim. Tom Cross thinks affording the Republican voters of Illinois the opportunity to vote their leaders into power is “punishment.” Apparently Cross imagines that his position is somehow ordained by God, or something. Surely we must avoid these lowly voters at all costs, eh Mr. Cross? Why, they would certainly gum up the works with their silly pretensions at “voting,” wouldn’t they Mr. Cross? The GALL of the voters imagining that they should be allowed to pick who leads them in this democracy of ours. It’s a crime, I tell you!
Notice, too, the butt covering procedural move the Republican leadership perpetrated…
The vote was 59-47 in the 118-member chamber. A procedural move erased the roll call and no official tally exists.
And why did they do this? Why else but to hide from the voters just who it was that voted to ditch this measure! The GOP leaders do not want the voters to know which one of them voted to make sure the voters themselves don’t get a vote.
We do know that Cross voted to block the bill, though. So, at least we know where he stands and it isn’t with the voters. Cross stands four-square for his assumption of noblesse oblige — unfortunately he sees the power and privilege and little of the great responsibilities to those to whom he should owe allegiance. Consequently, we know where the lowly voters rank in Tom Cross’ mind. Don’t we, Mr. Cross?
