While reading an article on low tax Texas vs. high tax California, it reminded me of the quickly dropped issue of the US Census. Last year’s scandal revolved around President Obama making some of his White House flunkies overseers of the Census. We all understood the implications of a highly partisan administration attempting to influence the outcome of the count. That being some states will be winners and others losers when it comes to the House of Representatives, along with federal funding. Given the predilections of this politician, padding the count is the Chicago way.
I would like to draw everyone’s attention back to something we have lost sight of regarding the Census. The counting that is done is without respect to citizenship. When the Founding Fathers wrote the provision of the Census into the Constitution, the intent was to count people who were current citizens or becoming citizens by virtue of choice, i.e. voting with their feet to live here. In today’s environment, we have some 13 to 20 million people illegally residing within the borders of our country who for the most part are economic sojourners with little desire for the responsibilities that come with citizenship. Furthermore, most of these people are here due to the incompetence of our government in securing the borders and to add insult to injury recently those (DHS) who enforce the laws have intentionally turned a blind eye to their presence. In all cases, local political officials have misused their positions of power to attract as many of these people as possible by refusing to and in most cases obstructing the enforcement of the law.
The problem with the Census becomes one of Constitutional importance beyond the simple counting of people when politicians have illegally manipulated the size of their jurisdiction to in effect gain more representation in Congress at the expense of those jurisdictions that abide by the law of the land. With a little more than 300 million people to represent for 435 House members, that works out to some 630,000 people per House member. Let’s take California for example. According to Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), there are some 3,200,000 (almost 10% of CA population) illegal aliens residing there estimated as of 2008. That’s roughly 5 more Representatives than they are entitled to have. This is more than the population of twenty individual States. We can see why California politicians are pro-Amnesty. Furthermore, the distribution of the illegal population is not uniform. How is it Constitutional for the twenty smaller states to lose representation in Congress to states such as California, New York, Texas or Florida? Since when is it the spirit of Representation in a Republic to disenfranchise citizens in favor of lawbreakers? Since when is it legal for non citizens to have a say in our government making legal and financial decisions?
Let us be clear, anyone who enters this country without our express permission has committed a crime, a misdemeanor. Anyone who illegally enters this country and then gains employment has committed a felony; if a false ID is used, that’s another felony; if an identity was stolen in the process, that’s another felony; if they falsified the I-9 form, that’s another felony. If it is such a serious crime meriting years in prison for illegally obtaining work under false pretenses, how much more so should it be a felony for those who misuse the US Census to gain extra representation in Congress in addition to obtaining extra funds from the federal government?
It becomes apparent that those who push the amnesty issue and who deliberately enable illegals to stay within their jurisdictions using arguments of fairness and compassion have no regard for the harm that comes from their actions. In fact, all these arguments in favor of amnesty are merely rationalizations why they can cheat the system for their own selfish benefit. How is it fair to millions of American citizens to be disenfranchised in Congress for the selfishness of the few? Where is the fairness and compassion for those who follow the rules? If it is illegal for a non-citizen to vote in our elections, how then is it legal to count them to determine how many Representatives for whom we vote in any given State? This among other issues should be addressed in the new election cycle this year. It is only fair that our Representatives should represent accurately what they stand for in order to give the citizens of this country a choice. Of course they may wish not to discuss this matter in order to decide on their own without our express consent.
