On Tuesday it was revealed that late last year Prosecutors in Ohio filed charges against Speaker of the House John Boehner’s country club bartender for a scheme to assassinate the Republican leader.
Michael Hoyt, 44, who worked at Wetherington Golf & Country Club in West Chester, Ohio, was charged after admitting that he considered poisoning the Speaker’s drinks in a loosely planned assassination plot.
Hoyt said that voices in his head told him that Boehner was “evil” and that the Speaker was responsible for last year’s Ebola outbreak. He also felt that Boehner had mistreated him during visits to the club.
The crazy plot was discovered after Hoyt himself called authorities on October 29 saying that he was “Jesus Christ” and needed to kill the Speaker.
“Hoyt told the officer he was Jesus Christ and he was going to kill Boehner because Boehner was mean to him at the country club and because Boehner is responsible for Ebola,” CNN reported. “Hoyt advised he had a loaded Beretta .380 automatic and he was going to shoot Boehner and take off.”
Hoyt also threatened the Speaker and his wife via email.
The club fired the man in October after complaints by several customers. The former barkeep seems to have suffered a psychotic break after being released. Hoyt is reported to have suffered a similar psychotic episode two years ago and has since been on medication for the condition.
Authorities report that Hoyt was held on a 72-hour psychiatric ward hold at the University of Cincinnati Hospital.
Speaker Boehner is well known as a man who like his cocktails. In fact, back in 2010 when he first rose to the Speaker’s chair Boehner’s drinking became the subject of an article that hailed the “return of the boozy politician.”
Raised by parents who owned a bar, the Speaker is well known to occasionally bend the elbow. In fact, early in his speakership when Obama suggested that the pair indulge a “Slurpee summit,” Boehner famously shot back that he wasn’t so sure about a Slurpee, but instead offered “How about a glass of Merlot?”
Breaking with the dry life that President George W. Bush fostered in Washington, Boehner is known for making sure that the booze flows freely at events and retreats.
With all that said, it may not be surprising that a bartender may be one person who might be able to get closest to the Republican’s most powerful leader.
