John Adams & The i-Tunes Pre-Amp

-By Matthew J. O’Connor

One of the most insightful and vivid books covering the formation of our Republic as experienced through the eyes of one of the greatest patriots and founding fathers, is a book simply entitled, “John Adams” written by David McCullough, published in 2001 by Simon & Schuster. The book has rightfully gained much acclaim due to author McCullough’s ability to make our Country’s founding come alive through rich detail and clarity as seen through the eyes of one of its principle founders, making the book read like a suspenseful novel.

John Adams was a country lawyer residing in the colony of Massachusetts who carried himself with honor and conviction and as McCullough describes right away in the book, “John Adams was not a man of the world. He enjoyed no social standing . . . there was no money in his background, no Adams fortune or elegant Adams homestead…”

What Adams did possess in fortune was his unwavering supply of determination leveled in support of American rights and liberty. And as McCullough describes of Adams, “patriotism burned in him like a blue flame . . . In less than a year’s time, as a delegate to the Continental Congress at Philadelphia, he had emerged as one of the most, ’sensible and forcible’ figures in the whole patriot cause, the ‘Great and Common Cause,’ his influence exceeding even that of his better-known kinsman, the ardent Boston patriot Samuel Adams.”

John Adams never gave up and was relentless in seeing independence, liberty and complete sovereignty take hold in the land we now call the United States of America of which Mr. Adams served as its first Vice President under George Washington and subsequently as it’s second President, preceding Thomas Jefferson.

America’s beginnings were set four-square in the pursuit of liberty borne out through multiple trials and tribulations. Take a look around, it’s in our history, it’s embodied in our Flag and Constitution, it’s in our destiny . . . liberty is the marrow of America, for we are a land of patriots. And we will not cease being as much in the face of adversity.

Don’t despair. Take a deep breath.

I’ll suggest a little pick-me-up. Pull up i-tunes and select the impresario on the flugelhorn playing, “Give it All You Got.” Except this time, turn on the equalizer, and click on the “pre-amp” and kick that sucker up to 10 – this will increase the volume exponentially – now is the time to turn on the equalizer and pre-amp up to 10, “Giving it all you got.” Please stand-up and get involved. Your country is reaching out . . . think of it as giving Mr. Adams a much needed helping hand for he is stumbling right now in a very major way.
