Illinois’ House Reps Have More Wealth Than Average Member of Their Electorate

(Here is my very first piece over at The Watchdog….)

-By Warner Todd Huston

A recent survey of the wealth of members of Congress revealed that, on average, it would take the combined wealth of 18 American households to equal the wealth of a single member of Congress. While this is an averaged statistic and individual cases vary, a review of the wealth of members of the Illinois delegation to Washington proves the rule rather than the exception.

The January report by OpenSecrets.org found that, “The median net worth of a member of Congress was $1,029,505 in 2013… compared with an average American household’s median net worth of $56,355.”

It is apropos to review what members of Congress are paid as they serve in Washington. Members of the House of Representatives are paid $174,000 a year, a salary that has been frozen in place since 2009. Speakers of the House and majority and minority leaders make a bit more than the average Congressman to befit their higher positions. Members of the House cannot collect a pension until they have served for five years, meaning they’d have to win election three times. Their pensions are never higher than 80 percent of their highest salary and is paid out at retirement age–unless they are still working somewhere in the federal government. In that case, they can’t collect a pension until they are no longer earning a federal salary.

So, what about Illinois? Well, the congressional salary itself certainly puts our representatives in a higher tax bracket than the average citizen of their state. According to information released by the U.S. Census, the median household income of the 13 million some citizens in Illinois is $56,777 annually. That is about 7 percent higher than the national average…

Ill. Rep. Gutiérrez Likely On Verge of Ethics Charges Filed Against Him

-By Warner Todd Huston

New reports suggest that Chicago Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D, ILL) is likely expecting to be charged with ethics violations in Washington.

USA Today reports that Gutiérrez has already spent some $30,000 in legal fees in preparation of defending himself from charges of ethics violations and no violations have yet been filed. It seems clear that the Congressman is sure they are on the verge of being filed.

Even with no investigation announced, in January the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) noted that at least one question over the Congressman’s actions was being held for consideration after the Illinois primaries (Election Day is March 18).

Naturally, Gutiérrez is refusing to make any statements on this matter–and that is probably a good idea since the whole matter is completely up in the air at this time.

Rep. Gutierrez Threatens Not to Support Obama Re-election Over Immigration

-By Warner Todd Huston

Chicago area Congressman Luis Gutierrez has been harping on the immigration issue for many years and since Obama was elected he has stepped up that activism. Gutierrez wants complete amnesty and an open border and he’s been unhappy with the Obama Administration for its lack of movement on the issue. Now he’s threatening not to support Obama’s 2012 reelection bid over his stymied immigration bill.

Gutierrez has been desperate to get an amnesty bill through Congress but has been stonewalled even by other Democrats. In 2009 he tried it. At that time I interviewed Rep. Brian Billbray who said that Gutierrez was merely setting up the next major wave of illegal immigration with his bill.

Last year Gutierrez even tried to shoehorn gay issues into an immigration bill in order to get his failed ideas passed. He pushed hard for the DREAM Act but that failed, too.

New Dem Idea: Can’t Win on Immigration? Then Stick Gay Issues in The Bill, Too!

-By Warner Todd Huston

Chicago’s Representative Luis Gutierrez has been finding few takers for his pro-illegal immigrant policies of late. But he and several Democrat lawmakers think they’ve found a way to increase support for their pro-illegal alien bill: add gay issues to it.

Once again it’s an Orwellian named bill, too. The pro-illegal alien supporters are calling this abomination the “Uniting American Families Act.”

The bill would allow gay couples from foreign countries to automatically bring in their gay partners and all their immediate family members into the United States when one of the pair has the fortune to make it across the border.
