‘New York Times’: Nixon Tapes Prove That Conservatives Should Give Up Principles

-By Warner Todd Huston

If you want a perfect example of how the left works, not to mention another example of how the Old Media establishment is thoroughly sold out to the far left, we have but to look to an August 23 piece in The New York Times by Francis X. Clines where we are told that the Nixon tapes show that Republicans should give up their principles and accept the left’s concepts and political policies.

Clines spends most of her piece talking about the release of the last batch of tape recordings made by Richard Nixon in the White House. Nixon’s tapes are, of course, a never ending source of fascination for liberals and from time to time also reveal an interesting window into the man’s soul, so the release of this last batch nearly 40 years after the President ignominiously resigned from office–the first (and only) president to do so—is of interest.

But buried at the end of her piece, Clines also unwittingly give us a window not into Nixon’s soul but into both hers and the leftist media’s souls.

Longtime Democrat Consultant: Obama’s White House is Incompetent Like Carter

-By Warner Todd Huston

Bob Shrum, a longtime Democrat operative, has decided that President Obama’s handling of the White House during this IRS scandal is bad. Maybe not “Nixonian” bad, but is instead a sort of Carteresque incompetence because of the way the President has handled these recent crises.

Shrum is a high powered, Democrat operative of the first order. He was a speech writer for such Democrat luminaries as George McGovern and Jimmy Carter, and worked on campaigns for Dick Gephardt, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Bob Kerry, and John Kerry and more, so when he speaks a lot of folks in the media pay attention.

For The Daily Beast, Shrum starts his piece denying that Obama did anything wrong with the IRS targeting of conservatives. He insists that Obama didn’t direct these attacks on his enemies and claims he had no idea it was going on. Shrum is going with blaming the “low level operatives in Cincinnati” explanation.

“For the White House, there is no crime here, there is no scandal, no matter how feverishly, irresponsibly, or demagogically the GOP labors to concoct one,” Shrum insists.

But once he gets past that disclaimer, he warms to his Obama-as-incompetent theme.

Fifty Years Ago, Kennedy and Nixon Changed our Politics Forever

-By Michael M. Bates

On September 26, 1960, Senator John Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon appeared in the first of what came to be called the Great Debates. How great they truly were is subject to dispute. But there’s no doubt they altered American politics permanently.

Kennedy looked tanned and rested, while Nixon had been ill and appeared fatigued. The Republican turned down an offer of stage makeup. That may have determined the future of the Nation.

Out of about 180 million citizens, 70 million watched that debate. Many believed Kennedy won decisively. It didn’t matter that sometimes JFK’s words made little sense:
