Historical Ignorance: Anti-Gun TV President Claims Slavery is ‘In The Constitution’

-By Warner Todd Huston

The faux President of the United States on the ABC TV show Scandal gave one of those typically left-wing TV speeches that is more like an uninformed screed meant to push a leftist agenda than truthful commentary. In this case the actor pretending to be president scorned the Second Amendment and then said incorrectly that slavery was enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

On the TV show, “President” Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) noted that the Second Amendment was “set in stone” in the Constitution, then as an aside said, “So was slavery, by the way.”

No it wasn’t… by the way. It is a lie the left tells.

In the show the “president’s” son was killed in a mass school shooting sending this “President” into his screed.

Here was the relevant part of the segment.

My son Jerry’s death was a horrible fluke. But it was just that — a fluke. An accident. A bacterial strain that we do not yet have the capacity to keep our loved ones safe from.

But there were thousands of people last year who lost their lives in a completely avoidable way. The right to bear arms — set in stone in the Constitution by our founding fathers. So was slavery, by the way. The right to bear arms — seems indisputable until the shooter comes, until you’re Lisa Elliot, covered in blood, watching a little girl take her last breath, watching the light go out of her eyes. And that, that is where the argument ends. That is when the debate is over.

My son, my son is dead. And I ask you here tonight, without a tele-prompter, without a speech, without anything but my love as a husband and a father and an American, how many other people’s children are we going to let die before we put a stop to this?

Incidentally this “President” is supposed to be a Republican.

But this speech is filled with lies. I won’t bother with the rote leftist attack on the Second Amendment. What is most false about this screed is the claim that slavery was “in the Constitution.”

It absolutely was not.

In fact, one of the most famous African Americans in US history, Frederick Douglass, said that we could “Abolish slavery tomorrow, and not a sentence or syllable of the Constitution need be altered.”

It must also be noted that not once do the words “slave” or “slavery” appear in the Constitution. The document instead said “persons” held in service.

Furthermore, Article 1 Section 9 of the United States Constitution puts an end to the importation of slaves. This would be odd for a document that enshrines slavery as a right.

Then there is the lie that many liberals cast at the Constitution, the claim that the founders said that black people were only worth three-fifths of a person.

This is a willful misreading of what the founders were doing with the three-fifths clause.

This clause was actually an anti-slavery move. It should be remembered that representation in Congress is awarded based on your number of citizens. So, by measuring slaves at only three fifths of a person, the clause devalued the representation that the slave powers would have in Congress.

Would liberals rather that slaves were counted as a full person giving the slave powers even MORE power in Congress?

In any case, all this shows that the world of entertainment is generally ignorant of facts and American history but in their stupidity they sure are ready to lie about our country to push their anti-American, left-wing agenda, aren’t they? Idiots.
