So much for the worker’s paradise in Red China! A man in Hefei Province, China was forced to cut his own leg off because he could not afford the cost of the operations and healthcare regimen that he needed to save his life.
Zheng Yanliang, who is from Boading, used a hack saw and a paring knife to remove his own rotting leg after suffering for over a year with intense pain as his leg withered and rotted.
Yanliang, a former farmer and factory worker, says that his pain began in January of 2012 and after several visits to the state hospital he was diagnosed with an arterial embolism.
Unfortunately for Mr. Yanliang, he was unable to afford the long treatment plan doctors outlined nor could he afford several operations he needed.
Soon his doctors refused to treat him further because he was unable to pay the bills.
Eventually Yanliang’s leg began to rot on the bone and the pain was so great he sometimes became unconscious as a result.
At some point, Yanliang realized he simply needed to have the leg removed.
He also realized he’d have to do it himself.
So, Yanliang grabbed his hack saw, a paring knife, and a wooden backscratcher to put between his teeth so that the pain wouldn’t break his teeth as he ground them together and he got to work.
Yanliang says it took him about 20 minutes and there wasn’t much pain until he got to the bone. He also says he cracked three or four teeth despite his precautions.
Unsurprisingly, Chinese authorities and doctors are now saying they will treat him for free because the story became an international sensation embarrassing the Chinese badly.
Yikes. You know what I am going to say here, don’t you? Yep… welcome to Obamacare.
