If Gay Marriage, Then End Civil Unions

-By Warner Todd Huston

Civil unions were the idea du jour when many gay agitators couldn’t get gay marriage passed into law. But now that it is beginning to look like gay marriage is about to be realized all across the country, civil unions laws should be ended. After all, they are inherently unfair if gay marriage is to be legalized.

What brought this to my mind is a report that the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has told its gay employees that there will be no benefits for their “spouse” unless there is a marriage contract. This makes sense because if the hospital is going to give to gay linins, why not do the same for every employee living with the opposite sex?

Where does it end?

Civil unions were created as a stand-in for gay marriage. The idea was that gay couples could claim to have a “union” and then could get all the benefits from government as if they were married.

We all know that these so-called civil unions were used mainly for gay couples, though once in a great while the law was applied to other forms of “coupling.” But it was chiefly a sop to the gay lobby.

But if gays are going to be awarded with gay marriage, why do we still need any civil union laws?

They should be eliminated as unfair. After all, of gays can have benefits from marriage and civil unions but straight couples only have marriage benefits, that isn’t fair, is it?

So, let’s get rid of civil unions if we are going to have gay marriage. Leaves civil unions on the ash heap of history and note that they have become an anachronism.
