A woman has been arrested in Boston for trying to scam money out of the Boston marathon bombing victim’s fund saying she had a brain injury. Turns out she wasn’t even in the state during the blast, much less the city!
There’s always those that will try and steal from the most vulnerable, isn’t there?
The woman, 26-year-old Audrea Gause of Troy, New York, was arrested in her home town on a Massachusets fugitive warrant that charged her with grand larceny.
Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said that Gause submitted a false claim to the relief fund that featured several pages of falsified medical records from Boston area hospitals and claimed she had a brain injury from the Boston bombing.
The sad thing is that the woman actually received a check for $480,000 before authorities found out about her fraud.
The payout was based on the false records alone. Gause claimed she had brain injuries that would require surgery in the future and currently had memory loss, impaired speech, and some loss of motor functions.
Mass. authorities, however, got a tip from someone that knows the woman and after a bit of investigation decided to arrest her for the fraud.
There have been other cases of fraud against the $64 million fund to help victims of the attack and because of that the Mass. Attorney General is looking at all payments made to assure they were legitimate… though, maybe they should have done that in the first place… maybe?
There’s always gotta be some, eh?
