Hate is What Unions Sell

-By Warner Todd Huston

This situation in Wisconsin has brought out the truth about unions: they peddle hate. Unions are exactly what Democrats try to claim the Tea Party is, a hate-filled, uncivil, mob of name callers. Unionistas use hateful and violent rhetoric, they call everyone that opposes them Hitler and they lie about their ultimate goals.

Many of you out there may be saying that we shouldn’t hold the obscene actions of a few bad Wisconsin teachers against the whole of uniondom. But we don’t have to restrict ourselves to Wisconsin to see this sort of hateful, violence themed rhetoric.

Yesterday, for instance, Massachusetts Democrat Representative Michael Capuana told a union crowd that sometimes the protesters have to “get a little bloody” on the streets to prove their fealty to the unions.

Out in Colorado union thugs held a rally and called their opponents “fascists,” said they wanted to raise taxes on everyone, and chanted “USA” while holding Mexican flags and hammer and sickle flags.

In Annapolis, Maryland a union supporter calls all Tea Partiers “uneducated” then this moron goes on to inform us that the whole country was “built on unions.” Forget about the fact that unions did not exist until well over 100 years after the country was founded… but, hey, you are uneducated.

In Ohio unionistas hatefully gave the finger to the eeeevil “tea baggers” that they hate so much. These union thugs even said that the blacks that are in Tea Party groups are “racists.”

Well, we can go to nearly every state in the union and every large city therein and find unions spreading their hate and violence-soaked rhetoric.

But let’s remember what the goals are that these union folks want. Are they fighting to better our children’s education? Are they fighting to make our government services better? Are they even fighting to save union member’s jobs?

No in each and every case.

In his “fireside chat” For years, I tried to use modest changes in pension and health insurance contributions as a means of balancing our budget without massive layoffs or furloughs. On nearly every occasion, the local unions (empowered by collective bargaining agreements) told me to go ahead and layoff workers. That’s not acceptable to me.

These public employee unions were not fighting to help their members keep their jobs. In fact, just the opposite. They told government officials to go ahead and lay workers off.

This might seem contradictory until you think about why they said layoffs were fine by them. You see, if layoffs happen the union itself does not lose anything. Employees must still pay dues to stay in the union, benefits for those remaining do not change — in fact get better as pliant politicians up the ante for their patrons in the unions — and the union’s status remains unchanged. You see, it’s all about the union and not the workers at all. This is about the power of the union chiefs. They don’t care about their members in the least.

Meanwhile, as these union chiefs shrug their shoulders and tell employers to go ahead and lay off workers, these fatcats are still making their hundreds of thousands per year in salary and benefits on the backs of workers that now have no job but still have to keep paying dues.

Unions are for unions, not workers. Worse, they are most especially not for good government and the health of taxpayer’s wallets. Unions are in it for themselves.

Above all, everyone should remember that this is the kind of hate, waste, and violence that Barack Obama supports. He loves this stuff.
