Ill. Policy Institute: Working for the man‏

A “First Step”
If you thought the passage of the expansive new health care bill was a pretty big deal, you might want to hold on to your hat. On the “Today” show, President Obama recently told Matt Lauer that it was simply a “first step.” You can watch by clicking here.

Workin’ For the Man…
Each year, the Tax Foundation releases the dates of Tax Freedom Day, which reveals how many days of the year we spend working to pay off state, federal, and local taxes. Here in Illinois, it falls on Sunday, April 11, meaning we work 101 out of 365 days just to pay taxes. Ouch.

Dispatches From Canada
Jerry Agar has been broadcasting from Toronto lately—and he’s also gotten a close-up look at the health care woes of our neighbor to the north. You can check out Jerry’s collection of dispatches from Canada, or read up on his responses to MoveOn.org’s “10 Things Every American Should Know About Healthcare Reform” here.

They’re Making How Much?
As recent news reports have shown, in tough economic times, it’s good to be a government employee—and that’s true in Illinois as well. According to IllinoisOpenGov.org, truck drivers on the state payroll are hauling in the cash—$73,564.12 on average per year. Meanwhile, private-sector Illinois truckers received average annual wages of $41,780 (for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers) or $31,890 (for light or delivery services drivers).

That’s not all. You can find disparities for state-paid auto mechanics here—and even more information on IllinoisOpenGov.org.
