Illinois Panel Votes to ‘Close’ Thomson Readying it for Guantanamo Terrorists

-By Warner Todd Huston

This afternoon the Illinois Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability voted 7-4 to formally close the Thomson Correctional Center. The next step could be to sell the facility to the federal government in order for Obama to deposit in the midst of Illinois citizens the dangerous terrorists from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba detainee facility.

This decision is but a stepping stone toward the eventual sale of the prison to the federal government. The panel only serves in an advisory capacity so this decision does not finalize any deals.

Earlier in the week Comptroller candidate William J. Kelly filed papers for the courts to put an injunction against using the Thomson prison to house terrorists from Guantanamo Bay. However, on Jan 5 Cook County Circuit Court Chancery Judge Martin Agran threw out Kelly’s request saying Kelly had no standing to bring the suit.

Apparently Kelly had filed his papers with the assistance of the law firm of Allison and Robert Motta, but the pair bowed out of further assistance with the case prompting the judge to incredulously ask if Kelly was representing himself during the Tuesday proceedings.

The Motta’s told the Daily Herald that they only helped Kelly file papers but did not intend to actually represent him in court and could not attend the hearing because of prior commitments.

Kelly addressed his loss afterward saying that, “they won the battle, but they won’t win the war.” He vowed to pursue the case.

“The people of Illinois deserve to be heard, whether they’re opposed or not to the transfer of the prison. I’m opposed to the transfer,” he added. “It’s going to make Illinois, and Chicago in particular, a target for al-Qaida. I believe the people of Illinois have a right to know that before it happens.”

Gubernatorial candidate Kirk Dillard also spoke about the Thomson decision in a press release today.

Today’s vote is unfortunate. Terror suspects should stay at Guantanamo. Importing jobs should not equate to importing terrorists. The working families of Illinois deserve better solutions for our economic problems than this. Pat Quinn’s decision once again demonstrates the pitiful jobs climate in Illinois and his lack of urgency to attract and create private sector jobs.

As governor, my highest priority will be balancing our budget and restoring confidence in state government so that we can make Illinois an employer-friendly state.

With this one more obstacle cleared we are yet another step closer to having dangerous al Qaeda terrorists living amongst us. Thanks President Obama.
