14th District Race: 1 More Drops Out Amid Calls to Pull Names From Ballot

-By Warner Todd Huston

First time aspirant Mark Vargas (R, Elgin) has suspended his campaign for the GOP nomination for the 14th District leaving now three Republicans vying for the Primary nod. Vargas is the second to drop out of contention as Jim Purcell recently quit his bid in a move for party unity.

Both Purcell and Vargas have thrown their support behind Ethan Hastert (R, Elburn), son of former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

Vargas told the Kane County Chronicle that he is still ambitious but is “realistic,” as well.

“This election is about new ideas and fresh faces, and Ethan Hastert has the right message, the right organization and the funding necessary to wage a successful and competitive campaign against Foster next fall,” Vargas said. “Politics is all about timing, and right now is not my time.”

It didn’t take long from Vargas’ afternoon announcement for the Hultgren campaign to publicly ask for Vargas to officially remove his name from the ballot.

A mass email from Hultgren campaign manager John Cooney went out by 4PM urging Vargas to contact the State Board of Elections in Chicago to have his name officially removed from the ballot. Cooney helpfully informs Vargas of the Board of Elections address and the correct form to file, too (a P-25 as it happens).

Cooney wrote, “On behalf of Randy Hultgren, I want to thank you for your willingness to step up and run for public office.”

Curiously, the email claims that candidate Jeff Danklesfen is also quitting the race, but I have yet to see any affirmation of that news. I will update once I find out for sure.

So, another 14th District candidate is hors de combat leaving now three Republicans still in the hunt.

That (may or may not depending on Danklefsen) leave the following candidates still in the race:

**UPDATE** Danklefsen give it up…
