Fox News Picks up Publius’ Forum G.I.Joe Story

On Thursday morning I got a phone call from Catherine Donaldson-Evans, a Staff writer/reporter for Fox News, about our piece titled “Hollywood: G.I. Joe no Longer American Soldier But an ‘International’ Operative?”

She saw our report and it struck the interest of Fox News to the point that she wanted some further reaction from me on the subject for a piece she was writing. After a nice half hour chat, she assured me that her story would soon appear on the Fox News main site.

True to her word, today appeared hers with the headline “G.I. Joe to Become Global Task Force in Movie.”

This blog and Newsbusters (where this story also appeared) is nicely identified in the 8th paragraph.

“I find it outrageous that they’d want to drop everything American” from the character, said conservative blogger Warner Todd Huston, who wrote about the rumors this week on Newsbusters.org and his own blog. “That’s nuts.”

Please do go read her story following up on the one featured here on Publius’ Forum.

  1. I found your blog through the FOXNews.com article. I did some digging and Hasbro still has the trademark rights to the toy and name, G.I. Joe. But based on their comments for the Fox story, it appears that they don’t give a damn if something that they have legal rights to is changed around (unless, I assume, they get handsomely compensated for it). This is an outrage and consumers in our free-market society should vote with their dollars by refusing Hasbro products. If we make enough noise, maybe the movie will get shut down. I have no problem with them wanting to make a movie with mass global appeal about a special forces type of agent; what I do have a problem with is their decision to twist around G.I. Joe, who represents a member of the United States military, to fit that mold.

  2. In todays world what other kind of hero is there besides “AN AMERICAN HERO”? A France hero? An Iraqi hero? I don’t think so! But the problem is they are most more than likely going to be made in China.
I am 42 years old and grew up with the real G.I. Joe. The best toy ever made as far as I’m concerned. But they take the American Hero out and I will NEVER buy it for my kids or grandkids. Why not just package them differently for the different countries?
France Joe could come with a white flag.
Iraq Joe with his own car bomb.
China Joe with his own lead paint.
Jimbo it’s not just a doll it is a toy legend! How many men or women do you think got the idea to join the military due to being raised with the one and only G.I. Joe, the American Hero?

  3. I find the reimaging of G.I. Joe disgraceful, absolutely disgraceful. I want to write to the movie producers, but I do not have their contact information. Would you be able to provide the information? Thank you very much.

  4. I can’t believe that Paramount would do this. I have three kids that fit Paramount’s demographic for this movie and I will never let them see this movie. I won’t even let them buy the merchandise from this movie.

Keep GI Joe “The American Hero” or you will have one of the biggest bombs of all time.

  5. what the hell is this???? i grew up with this true american hero!!! not only is this destroying his image its destroying what they were made for. they were made in honor of the thousands of real hero’s who faught and died protecting freedom from dictatorship. I guess protecting our great country isn’t “politically correct” anymore. well neither is this… FOR YOU PROBABLY DEMOCRATIC HIPPY BASTORDS LEAVE OUR HERITAGE ALONE!!!! IF U DON’T LIKE AMERICAN HEROS THEN FIND A NEW DAMN COUNTRY!!!
